Red Raiders Pull Away in Second Half for Win Over Culver-Stockton

UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. — Northwestern defeated Culver-Stockton (MO) 77-65 on Saturday. The Raiders scored eight straight points spanning halftime, flipping a 37-36 deficit into a 44-37 lead.

Max Dearborn's three-pointer off Grant Tigges' assist with five seconds left gave the Red Raiders a 39-37 halftime lead after Culver-Stockton moved in front in the final minute. Earlier, the Raiders opened with second-chance opportunities and perimeter scoring, getting a Brennan Reid triple and later using a nine-point run from 13:26 to 11:40 to turn a 14-12 edge into a 23-12 lead. Boston Ekart contributed on both ends during that stretch with a steal, a layup, and a shot from beyond the arc, and the Red Raiders also got free throws from Tigges while holding Culver-Stockton scoreless through the run. Culver-Stockton answered later in the half with several treys and eventually took a 37-36 lead with 31 seconds left, but Dearborn's second three-pointer of the half put the Raiders back ahead at the break. The Red Raiders shot seven-for-18 from downtown, went six-for-six at the free-throw line and held a 16-14 rebounding edge in the half.

The Raiders outscored Culver-Stockton 38-28 in the second half, shooting 14-for-27 from the field and six-for-nine from three-point range with 11 assists on 14 made baskets. Ekart scored on the Raiders' first possession, Caleb Grant and Trey Brandt followed from beyond the arc, and the Red Raiders were up 51-42 after Ekart's layup at 17:20. Culver-Stockton got within 51-48, but Tigges assisted on Grant's three-pointer at 14:37 and Grant later assisted on Ekart's triple at 14:02 to move the Raiders back to 57-48. The Red Raiders then held Culver-Stockton without a field goal from a layup at 13:41 until a layup at 6:58, a stretch that included Luke Korver's putback, Grant's layup and free throw, Tigges' layup and Brandt's three-pointer. After Grant's shot from downtown put the Raiders ahead 75-60 with 4:36 left, Culver-Stockton scored the next five points, but Brandt's layup at 2:24 produced the final points in the Red Raiders' 77-65 win.
