ORANGE CITY, Iowa — Northwestern dropped a 2-1 decision to College of Saint Mary (Neb.) on Saturday despite holding an 18-6 advantage in shots, including an 11-2 edge after halftime.
The Red Raiders got on the board first when Adah Baron found Marissa Talamantes, who finished in the 4th minute to give Northwestern a 1-0 lead. CSM answered in the 19th minute when Ella Klusman scored off a pass from Makena Kramer to even the match.
Klusman struck again just over six minutes later, giving the Flames a 2-1 lead. Northwestern had several opportunities to answer before the break, including a Hannah Gordon header that hit the post and a shot from Baron that was saved by CSM goalkeeper Jenna Brown.
The Raiders came out pressing in the second half. Talamantes put a shot on goal early, followed by attempts from Ella Gates, Olivia Regnerus and Lydia Timm. Northwestern continued to create chances throughout the half, but Brown came up with several key saves to keep the Raiders off the scoreboard.
Grace Timm and Lucy Staines each had shots blocked, while Regnerus sent a header wide and Camryn Wilkinson had a header saved. Wilkinson put another shot on frame in the 81st minute, and Northwestern earned back-to-back corner kicks as it continued to push for the equalizer.
The Raiders had a couple more chances in the final minutes from Staines and Timm, but neither found the back of the net as CSM held on for the 2-1 victory.
