Red Raiders Come Roaring Back for a Three Sets to One Win

Orange City, Iowa —  Northwestern defeated Midland 3-1 (22-25, 25-13, 25-8, 25-18) on Friday. The Raiders hit .296 with 58 kills while holding Midland to a .064 hitting percentage and 34 kills.

The Red Raiders settled in after Midland's first point, getting four early kills from Stella Winterfeld and block assists from Aubrey De Groot with Nyah Potthoff and Jadyn Hofmeyer as the home side built an 8-4 lead. Midland cut into the gap and, after the Raiders held a 12-9 edge, scored four straight points capped by an Emily Stansberry kill to move in front 13-12, then stretched the margin to 16-13 before the Raiders called timeout. The Raiders got back within 20-19 on a Halie Kapelke kill and an Abree Plueger attack error, but Midland pushed ahead 22-19 on Plueger's ace. A late De Groot kill brought the Raiders within 23-22, before Stansberry and Brooklynn Snyder delivered consecutive Midland kills to close the set 25-22.

After Midland moved ahead 2-1, the Raiders answered with a Winterfeld kill, an Aubrey De Groot block and a Potthoff ace before Halie Kapelke's kill made it 5-3. Winterfeld's kill started a four-point serving stretch that included kills by De Groot and Hofmeyer and a De Groot-Kapelke block, pushing the Raiders ahead 9-3 before Midland called timeout. The lead stayed at least five through the middle of the set, with Madi Nemmers and Sidney Oostra adding service aces and Maddy Sampson contributing kills as the Raiders moved ahead 18-8. With the score at 21-13, the Raiders scored the last four points on kills by Sampson, Bella Sysa and Potthoff followed by a Midland attack error to finish the set 25-13.

A 3-1 lead gave the Raiders an early edge, then Stella Winterfeld's sideout kill and a six-point service turn from Potthoff stretched the set to 10-1, with Potthoff, Kapelke and Winterfeld recording kills during the run. After a pair of service errors, Winterfeld served an ace for 12-2, and kills by Hofmeyer and Kapelke helped the Raiders move to 15-4. Anni Wedgbury then served four straight Raiders points to make it 19-4, a stretch that included a Hofmeyer kill and consecutive blocks by Sampson and Potthoff. Midland added late kills from Brena Mackling, Brooklynn Snyder and Emily Stansberry, but the Raiders reached set point on Aubrey De Groot's kill and finished the set 25-8 on Potthoff's service ace.

The Raiders moved ahead 7-3 in the fourth set after kills from Aubrey De Groot, Winterfeld and Kapelke, but Midland answered with four straight points to tie it at 7-7. Winterfeld's kill and a block by De Groot and Kapelke helped the Raiders move back in front, and Maggie Bloom's ace was part of a push that stretched the lead to 12-8. Sampson added three kills during a stretch that sent the Raiders to a 16-10 advantage, and Winterfeld followed a Midland timeout with another kill for 17-10. Oostra served an ace for 19-12, late kills from De Groot and Kapelke helped the Raiders reach 24-16, and after Midland scored twice, a service error closed the Raiders' 25-18 set win.
