Northwestern Remains Unbeaten in GPAC Play After a Top 3 Sweep

Orange City, Iowa —  Northwestern swept Concordia (NE) 3-0 on Saturday, winning 25-23, 25-15, 25-22. The Red Raiders finished with 43 kills and a .272 hitting percentage, including a .536 mark in the second set, while the Bulldogs hit .165.

The Raiders moved in front 4-2 on a Bulldogs attack error and an Aubrey De Groot kill, but the Bulldogs scored three straight points to go ahead 6-5 before a Maddy Sampson kill and Maggie Bloom ace helped the Red Raiders take an 8-6 edge. After the teams played to 13-13, the Raiders used a block by De Groot and Halie Kapelke, a Stella Winterfeld ace and a Bulldogs error to build a 16-13 lead, then later got kills from Kapelke, Winterfeld and Sampson to move ahead 20-15. The Bulldogs answered with four straight points, including kills by Lanie Brott and Bella Hedke, to pull within 20-19, but a service error and back-to-back Sampson kills pushed the Red Raiders back ahead 23-19. The Raiders reached set point at 24-21 on a Shandy Faalii attack error, and after the Bulldogs closed within 24-23, Winterfeld finished the set with a kill from Nyah Potthoff for a 25-23 win.

The Red Raiders traded points early but stayed ahead after breaking a 1-1 tie, getting kills from Sampson, Winterfeld and Kapelke while building an 8-5 lead. With the score at 10-8, Kapelke's kill started a four-point stretch that also included a Bulldogs attack error, a Jadyn Hofmeyer kill and a Winterfeld service ace for a 14-8 advantage. The Bulldogs kept exchanging points through 19-14, but the Raiders took four straight on two Kapelke kills, a Winterfeld ace and Hofmeyer's kill, then finished the set 25-15 after Kapelke's kill and a Bulldogs attack error.

The Bulldogs moved ahead 8-5 on Clara Evert's service ace, but the Red Raiders worked back behind kills from Sampson and Aubrey De Groot, a block by De Groot and Winterfeld, a Kapelke kill and a Potthoff ace to take a 13-11 lead. The Bulldogs answered with three straight points to go back in front 15-13, and after the set was tied at 17-17, Bloom served consecutive aces to put the Raiders up 19-17. The teams traded points into the late stages, with the Bulldogs taking a 22-21 lead on Shandy Faalii's kill before Sampson tied it with a kill. The Red Raiders scored the final four points, reaching set point on a Laynee Baker attack error and finishing the set 25-22 on Bella Hedke's attack error blocked by De Groot.
