Raiders Drop Back and Forth Battle

ORANGE CITY, Iowa — Northwestern College suffered a tough loss against Mount Marty University, falling 72-65 at the Bultman Center on Wednesday. Despite holding a twelve-point lead in the first quarter, the Raiders couldn't hold off the Lancers, who capitalized on eighteen turnovers and turned them into twenty-three points.

Northwestern came out strong in the first quarter, with their defense setting the tone right from the start. Margo Schuiteman's block energized the team. Although the Raiders faced an early deficit, they quickly found their stride. Schuiteman scored in the paint, slicing into the Lancers' lead, and soon enough, Allison Piercy and Ellie Karolevitz teamed up for a series of successful plays. Piercy nailed a crucial three-pointer, while Karolevitz added a layup, helping Northwestern set the pace for the quarter.

The Raiders extended their lead with smooth ball movement, leading to multiple assisted baskets, including a three-pointer from Mya Kochuten. Emily TerWee added vital points in the paint, pushing the lead further. By the end of the quarter, Northwestern led Mount Marty 24–16, enjoying a comfortable cushion heading into the next period.

Northwestern's defense remained strong in the second quarter, holding their lead until midway through the period. Although the Lancers began to close the gap, the Raiders pulled ahead again with two free throws by Ashtyn Wobig at 5:22 and a three-pointer from Kochuten, stretching the lead to 31–26.

Mount Marty answered back with a scoring surge, briefly taking the lead at 1:55 with a three-pointer. The Raiders quickly responded with another clutch three-pointer by Piercy at 55 seconds, regaining a slim lead. The quarter ended all tied up at 37–37 after the Lancers' free throws in the final seconds.

The third quarter kicked off with both teams exchanging blows. Schuiteman's layup briefly gave Northwestern the lead, but the real momentum shift came when Wobig drained a three-pointer at 8:20, assisted by TerWee, putting the Raiders up by five at 6:03.

Despite Northwestern's efforts, the Lancers fought back, tying the game multiple times. Wobig's layup at 1:03, with an assist from Kochuten, put the Raiders ahead once more, but Mount Marty edged ahead with a layup to close the quarter, leading 55-53.

Entering the fourth quarter, Northwestern intensified their defense, highlighted by TerWee's block at 7:19, keeping the game tightly contested. Wobig made significant contributions on offense, scoring twice in the paint to close Mount Marty's lead. Leah Williams hit an early three-pointer for the Lancers, but the Raiders kept pushing, narrowing the gap to a single point with Wobig's jumper at 7:38.

The Raiders continued to fight, with Schuiteman scoring to bring them within one at 3:00. However, the Lancers held on with timely baskets, including a pivotal three-pointer by Kaela Martinez at 1:55. Despite Northwestern's relentless efforts, missed free throws hampered their comeback attempts.

The quarter wrapped up with Mount Marty extending their lead to seal a 72–65 victory. The Raiders' late-game efforts to close the gap weren't enough, as the Lancers made the most of their free throws, maintaining their edge through the final moments.
