Fourth Quarter Comeback Comes Up Short to Start the New Year

SEWARD, Neb. — The Northwestern College women's basketball team (8-7, 4-5 GPAC) came up just short against Concordia Nebraska (12-3, 7-2 GPAC), with a 69-67 defeat on Saturday. Despite limiting the Bulldogs to merely nine points in the fourth quarter, Concordia's 76.5% success at the free-throw line proved pivotal in maintaining their edge.

Northwestern hit the court strong in the first quarter, showcasing sharp offensive play. Margo Schuiteman and Kylie Foss spearheaded a seven-point run, pushing the Raiders to a 14–8 lead halfway through the quarter. However, Concordia countered effectively, utilizing bench strength and free throws to close the gap and eventually take control. A buzzer-beater three-pointer gave them a 21–16 lead at the end of the first.

The second quarter saw the Raiders battling hard in the paint, with Schuiteman sinking a jumper off an assist from Emily TerWee. Northwestern's defense shone with three blocks, including a standout moment from Schuiteman at the 6:39 mark. A fast break layup by TerWee brought the Raiders within three points, but Concordia answered back, stretching their lead to nine with 3:45 remaining. Schuiteman drilled a three-pointer at 1:47, but a Concordia buzzer-beater extended their lead to 41–32 at halftime.

The third quarter presented a tough battle for the Red Raiders as Concordia slightly extended their advantage. Kristin Vieselmeyer's key three-pointer at 1:54 fueled the Bulldogs' push. Northwestern fought back with Schuiteman's three-pointer and four free throws, plus contributions from Ellie Karolevitz with a jumper. Aubrey Schwieso's rebound and layup added to the effort, yet Concordia's steady shooting held them ahead, ending the quarter at 60-48.

In the final quarter, Northwestern launched a spirited comeback, capitalizing on Concordia's turnovers. Schuiteman's fast-break layup, assisted by Allison Piercy, set the tone. Karolevitz's steal and assist to Wobig for a layup chipped away at the deficit.

With the clock winding down, Piercy's clutch three-pointer at 3:57, assisted by Mya Kochuten, brought Northwestern within four points. TerWee's defensive stop and rebound led to another fast-break layup by Schuiteman, closing the gap even further.

In a nail-biting finish, Piercy sank another three-pointer, briefly giving the Raiders a 65-64 lead with just 53 seconds on the clock. However, Concordia responded with a layup from Raelyn Kelty and crucial free throws by Juliana Jones to seal their narrow win. A final jumper by Schuiteman with two seconds left wasn't enough as Northwestern fell short, 69-67.
