Big First Half Boosts Raiders to Victory

FREMONT, Neb. — Northwestern College (10-10, 6-8) powered past Midland University (3-18, 2-13) with an impressive 84-60 victory, fueled by a commanding 49-34 rebounding edge. The Red Raiders surged ahead by as many as twenty-four points in the third quarter, dominating the paint with forty-two points.

Northwestern kicked off Saturday's game with a stellar start, swiftly overcoming an early five-point deficit. After Midland briefly led, the Raiders answered back with some impressive play on offense, including a three-pointer by Allison Piercy at 8:22 to tie it up, followed by a lead-taking layup from Margo Schuiteman at 7:40. On defense, the Raiders were relentless, forcing seven turnovers that led to multiple scoring opportunities.

The Raiders kept the momentum rolling as the quarter unfolded. Emily TerWee made key baskets in the paint, and the team took advantage of the Warriors' miscues to widen the gap. Near the quarter's end, Ashtyn Wobig drained a three-pointer at 0:41, giving the Raiders their largest lead of the period. The first quarter wrapped up with Northwestern holding a 27-19 advantage, showcasing a well-rounded attack and fierce defense.

In the second quarter, the Raiders continued to stretch their lead with a solid 12–4 edge in the paint. Highlights included a layup from Wobig at 7:08, assisted by Kylie Foss. Northwestern's defense held strong, conceding only four made baskets from Midland and grabbing twelve rebounds to limit second chances.

The Raiders stayed aggressive, with Piercy sinking another three-pointer at 6:19 to extend their lead. Free-throw opportunities were seized, with Foss making two at 6:47. A 9-0 run capped by TerWee's layup with thirty seconds left underscored their dominance. The quarter ended with Ellie Karolevitz scoring at the rim, pushing the Raiders to a 50-31 lead.

Northwestern carried its momentum into the third quarter, quickly widening the gap. Early highlights featured a three-pointer from Piercy and a layup by TerWee as part of a thirteen-point spree. Capitalizing on Midland's turnovers, Foss and Jaelye Woudstra were crucial with defensive rebounds and steals.

Continuing their offensive intensity, Schuiteman and Aubrey Metzger added key points. The team's efficient passing shone through with eight assists in the quarter. Despite the Warriors' attempts to chip away at the lead with long-range shots, Northwestern stayed comfortably ahead. The third quarter concluded with both teams scoring twenty-two points, keeping Northwestern firmly in command at 72-53.

In the fourth quarter, the Raiders extended their lead, setting the tone with strong defensive play. TerWee made an early block, and Schuiteman added two free throws to widen the margin. Northwestern capitalized on Midland's turnovers, highlighted by a Foss steal leading to a Schuiteman layup, assisted by Wobig.

The Raiders' defense was key, logging three blocks and holding the Warriors to just two baskets. Offensive rebounds by TerWee and Foss kept the pressure on, while Karolevitz and Metzger chipped in with baskets in the paint. The game closed out with the Raiders leading 84-60, sealing a confident win.
