Late Score Downs Northwestern in GPAC Battle

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – Dordt scored a touchdown with 13 second remaining to take the final lead over No. 14 Northwestern in front of a packed crowd at De Valois Stadium.

The defensive efforts of Camden Kruse and Luke Jeltema helped contain Dordt's opening drive, which ended without a score thanks to an interception by Ben Egli. Egli returned the interception 36 yards, setting up Northwestern's offense at the Dordt 34-yard line.

Capitalizing on the turnover, Colby Duncan connected with Carson Ness for a 7-yard gain, followed by Gardner Casey's effective rushing. Casey's 15-yard touchdown run was capped by Gianna Bennett's successful extra point, putting Northwestern ahead. The defense remained strong, forcing Dordt to punt on their subsequent possession. The quarter closed with the Red Raiders leading 7-0, maintaining momentum on both sides of the ball.

Northwestern's defense set the tone at the start of the second quarter by pushing the Defenders back with a critical third-down stop, forcing a punt. The Raiders capitalized on the ensuing possession with Duncan's precise passing, linking with Casey for a 38-yard gain to midfield. Despite a missed field goal attempt, the defense struck back as Egli intercepted a deflected ball, giving the offense another chance. The ensuing drive ended with a 26-yard field goal by Bennett, extending Northwestern's lead to 10-0.

With the momentum in their favor, the Red Raiders' defense continued to pressure Dordt, resulting in another interception, this time by Jordan Carter, who returned it 53 yards for a touchdown, extending the advantage to 17-0.  The Defenders responded late in the quarter with a touchdown pass on a trick play, cutting the deficit to 17-7.

The third quarter began with the Raiders maintaining momentum from the first half. Casey and Duncan orchestrated a balanced drive, moving the team downfield with a mix of rushes and key receptions. Duncan connected with Sam Remmerde for a barrelling 36-yard gain to put Northwestern in scoring position, culminating in a 36-yard field goal by Bennett.
Dordt responded with a determined drive, highlighted by a 49-yard pass from Noah Strickfaden to Thomas Fritz, setting up a touchdown pass to Jake Van Donge to close the gap. Northwestern's Braeden Bosma returned the ensuing kickoff 47 yards, providing solid field position. Despite this, the Raiders' offense stalled, leading to a punt. As the quarter closed, Northwestern held a narrow lead with the score at 20-14.

After a defensive battle throughout the final frame, the final minutes saw the Defenders drive deep into Northwestern territory, ultimately scoring a touchdown with 13 seconds left on the clock and securing the 21-20 victory.
