Volleyball Begins Road Trip with Sweep at Waldorf

FOREST CITY, Iowa – Heading out to their first of two road matches this week, the No. 6-ranked Red Raider volleyball team completed a dominant sweep of Waldorf on Wednesday night.

How It Happened
Northwestern opened the first set with authority, establishing an early lead after a series of blocks by Zavyr Metzger and Aubrey De Groot, which contributed to a 5-2 score. The Warriors called a timeout after the Raiders extended their lead to 7-2, but the visiting team continued to score and add to the lead. Liv Reitsma facilitated multiple kills, expanding the Raiders' advantage to 20-6. Despite a brief rally from Waldorf, the Red Raiders maintained control, concluding the set at 25-11.

The Red Raiders secured a commanding victory in the second set with a 25-13 decision. Metzger led Northwestern's offense with multiple key points, including consecutive kills early in the set, pushing the score to 3-1. The Raiders capitalized on the Warriors' errors, including four attack errors and a service error, to extend their lead to 11-4. Madi Nemmers contributed significantly with a service ace, setting the score at 17-5. The set concluded with Metzger's decisive kill, assisted by Nyah Potthoff, sealing the set at 25-13.

The Raiders opened the third set with a strong performance from De Groot, who contributed multiple kills to give her team an early edge. The Warriors kept pace initially, with Emily Goodner and Peyton Klooster providing key kills to keep the match close. A service ace from Rina Maiava briefly put Waldorf ahead, but Northwestern rallied with a series of points, including a service ace by Potthoff that shifted momentum. A critical run by the Raiders, highlighted by attack errors from Waldorf, extended their lead to 19-15. Despite the Warriors' attempts to close the gap, De Groot secured the match for the Raiders with a kill, completing the sweep with a third set of 25-21.

  • Aubrey De Groot matched her career high with 11 kills, hitting at .611.
  • Maddy Sampson and Zavyr Metzger led the defense with four blocks each.
  • Metzger also contributed to the offense with seven kills.

  • Northwestern hit .313 on the night and limited Waldorf to a .010 clip.
  • The Raiders have held their opponents under .200 in all but one match this year.
