Metzger’s Blocking Effort Contributes to GPAC Award

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Northwestern middle hitter Zavyr Metzger has been selected as the GPAC Defensive Player of the Week, presented by Hauff Mid-America Sports. It is the second time this season that she has earned a GPAC weekly honor.

"What an impressive weekend on the defensive side for Zavyr to get 12 blocks in a three-set match along with another double-digit blocking effort against Park," noted head coach Kyle Van Den Bosch. "Our team defense had a great week of volleyball and our block is the starting point for that to happen."

Metzger, a senior from Larchwood, Iowa, averaged 2.56 blocks per set in a 3-1 week for the Raiders, highlighted by a 12-block performance in a sweep of Kansas Wesleyan on Friday. She also contributed 11 blocks in Saturday's five-set thriller against Park (Mo.). In addition to her defensive efforts, Metzger averaged 1.50 kills per set for the week. Metzger's 2.04 blocks per set season average leads the NAIA.

The Raiders continue conference play this week, hitting the road to face Waldorf and College of Saint Mary.
