Metzger's Dominant Defense Leads Raiders in Win

PARKVILLE, Mo. - Northwestern headed to tournament number three of the season, where, led by Zavyr Metzger in the front row, swept Kansas Wesleyan in a 3-0 victory on Friday afternoon.

NWC 3 - KWU 0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-16)
How It Happened:

In the first set, both teams traded points up to a 16-16 tie. The momentum shifted as the Red Raiders went on a decisive 5-0 run, bolstered by a service ace from Madi Nemmers, prompting a timeout from KWU. Northwestern maintained their lead with Nyah Potthoff and Emma Westphal each delivering crucial kills to close out the set.

The second set once again saw a series of back-and-forth exchanges early on, with Kansas Wesleyan pulling ahead to a 6-2 lead. However, the Raiders responded with a strong showing, closing the gap with a series of kills by Sidney Oostra and Aubrey De Groot, leveling the score at 9-9. A critical turning point came as Northwestern embarked on an 8-0 run, driven by attack errors from the Coyotes and blocks from Zavyr Metzger and Westphal, pushing the score to 19-15 in favor of the Raiders. Despite a timeout called by KWU, the Raiders maintained control and clinched the set 25-17.

It would be a similar story for the third set as Kansas Wesleyan surged to an early 4-0 lead, but the Raiders continued to respond with a strong defensive front, as blocks by Metzger and Aubrey De Groot helped the team to claw back, leveling the score at 12-12. Another set, another scoring run as Northwestern went on a 7-0 run, featuring multiple errors by KWU, to take a commanding 18-14 lead. The Raiders continued to dominate, eventually closing the set 25-16, highlighted by strong performances from Liv Reitsma with several key assists, and Zavyr Metzger's key contributions at the net.
