Den Hartog Athletic Complex Dedication Ceremony Set for October 3

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – Northwestern College is set to host the dedication of the Den Hartog Athletic Complex on Friday, October 3, at 4:00 p.m. The ceremony will take place at the new facility located on the southeast side of the Bultman Center and is free and open to the public.

The Den Hartog Athletic Complex is named in honor of John and Ann Den Hartog, whose significant contributions made the project possible. This state-of-the-art facility enhances the college's athletic program by providing modern amenities that cater to the needs of Northwestern's student-athletes. The complex includes a new football locker room, coaches' offices, a foyer showcasing Northwestern's athletic history, and a 140-seat team room. Additionally, existing locker rooms have been renovated to better serve the college's sports teams.

"This standout facility would not have been possible without the lead gift from John Den Hartog and generous gifts of so many others," Northwestern President Greg Christy stated. "I am so grateful John was able to be present for the groundbreaking with his family and only wish he was here to see the finished product."

Designed by 10Fold Architecture and Engineering, the facility emphasizes efficient space utilization and prominently features the Raider identity with vivid graphics and signage. These updates not only offer each student-athlete a dedicated locker and home locker room but also support the recruiting process and coaching needs, underscoring Northwestern College's commitment to enhancing the student experience.

"We are blessed to have tremendous donors who give to the mission of Northwestern College Athletics. The Den Hartog Athletic Complex is an elite facility that will benefit all Raider Athletes for years to come," Vice President for Athletics Tony Hoops said.

Community members, staff, and supporters of Northwestern College are encouraged to attend the dedication ceremony to explore the facility and celebrate its inauguration. This event marks a significant milestone for the college and its athletic program, offering a glimpse into the future of athletics at Northwestern.

ABOUT JOHN & ANN DEN HARTOG
John and Ann were generous donors to Northwestern College and loyal fans of Raider athletics. They contributed to every capital project from 2012–24, including the naming gift for the Den Hartog Athletic Complex and the lead gift for the first stage of the Bultman Center renovation. The Bultman basketball court was renamed in their honor and the press box in De Valois Stadium also bears their name. The Den Hartogs were members of the Raider Athletics Association and regularly attended home athletic events, where they enjoyed interacting with fellow Raider fans.

Beyond their investment in Raider athletics, John and Ann cared deeply about Northwestern and its success in the realm of Christian higher education. Two of their children are alumni, as well as five grandchildren. John served on the college's Board of Trustees from 1990 to 1998, and again from 2000 to 2008.

Both natives of northwest Iowa, John and Ann were recognized throughout the region for their legacy as founders of Den Hartog Industries, as well as their advocacy for the Hospers, Iowa, community. Ann died in September 2022, and John died in November 2024, six months after the college broke ground on the Den Hartog Athletic Complex. Family and friends remember them for their strong commitment to family; their joyful spirits, warm hospitality, and profound generosity; and most especially their dedication to loving and serving Jesus Christ.
