Second Half Surge Lifts Raiders Past Dakota State

MADISON, S.D. — Northwestern (4-2-0) edged out Dakota State (0-7-1) scoring two decisive goals in the second-half to close out the game with a 3-2 victory over the Trojans. 

The first half between Northwestern and Dakota State saw a balanced contest, but the Raiders would strike first in the 26th minute taking a 1-0 lead with Camryn Wilkinson scoring her first goal of the season assisted by Marissa Talamantes off the corner kick. DSU responded with a long-range goal from Onika Kline, assisted by Kirsten Piskorski. The half concluded with both teams locked at 1-1, after a close call for the Trojans when Piskorski's shot hit the crossbar in the 44th minute. 

The second half began with DSU extending their lead in the 47th minute, as Madison Smalley scored her first goal of the season, assisted by Charli Zimmerman. The Raiders responded with a penalty kick goal by Lucy Staines in the 65th minute, leveling the score at 2-2. Northwestern took the lead in the 72nd minute with a goal from Olivia Regnerus of the assist from Taylor Brennan, marking Regnerus's second goal of the season. Despite several attempts from the Trojans, including multiple saves by the Raiders' goalkeeper Bynum, the Raiders maintained their advantage to secure the win. 

MATCH NOTES 

  • Lucy Staines picks up her first goal of the season with her penalty kick. 

  • Bailey Bynum recorded six saves on the night with two huge saves late in the contest. 

Up Next: Northwestern will be back in action on September 20th, as they open conference play at home against Concordia. The matchup is set for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff at the NWC Soccer Complex.
