Northwestern Falls to Top-Ranked Opponent

OMAHA, Nebraska - In the first two matches of teh tournament, the Raiders swept unranked Bethel before being swept by #5 Eastern Oregon in the late night battle.

Game 1: NWC 3 - Bethel 0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-17)
How It Happened

Northwestern opened the first set with a commanding performance, taking an early lead of 7-1, highlighted by three kills from Zavyr Metzger. Bethel called a timeout to slow the momentum but struggled to close the gap. The Raiders extended their lead to 14-7 after a service ace by Liv Reitsma and a kill by Stella Winterfeld. Bethel managed to narrow the deficit with a brief surge, bringing the score to 21-17 after a series of attack errors by the Raiders. However, they quickly regained control and ended the set 25-18.

In the second set, the Raiders opened strong once again, taking a 6-1 lead. Bethel managed to interrupt the momentum, but Northwestern quickly extended their lead to 10-5. Despite a series of attack errors by the Raiders, Bethel narrowed the gap to 12-10. A subsequent push by Northwestern, including crucial kills by Stella Winterfeld and Maddy Sampson, brought the home team to a 15-10 advantage, prompting a timeout. Bethel responded by reducing the deficit to 21-20, but Northwestern closed out the set with a decisive 25-21 victory, thanks to a service ace by Liv Reitsma on the final point.

The Raiders built an early 4-2 lead with Sidney Oostra and Winterfeld making significant contributions. A strategic timeout called by Bethel at 15-9 could not halt Northwestern's momentum, as Nyah Potthoff's service ace extended the lead. Despite a late surge by Bethel, Northwestern closed out the set with a block from Zavyr Metzger and Emma Westphal, capitalizing on Bethel's errors.

Game Notes:
  • Zavyr Metzger tied a career high in kills with 11, while adding three blocks
  • Leading the team in kills was Stella Winterfeld with 15
  • Metzger and Aubrey De Groot both hit over 50% 
  • De Groot played just two sets, but earned six kills on nine attacks
  • Nyah Potthoff (19) and Liv Reistma (22) supplemented the offense once again with 41 assists
Game 2: NWC 0 - #5 Eastern Oregon 3
How It Happened

In the first set, the Raiders and the Mountaineers traded points early, with the latter taking a slight lead at 6-5. Northwestern responded with a 4-0 run to pull ahead 9-7. Eastern Oregon then capitalized on several attack errors by the Raiders to regain the lead at 12-10. A timeout by Northwestern at 21-18 aimed to halt the Mountaineers' momentum, but they extended their lead to 24-20. Despite closing the gap to 24-22, EOU cemented a 25-22 win.

Eastern Oregon started the second set strong, capitalizing on a service ace and a series of Raiders errors to establish a 3-0 lead. The Raiders managed to interrupt the Mountaineer's momentum with a kill by Stella Winterfeld at 3-1, but EOU responded with a 5-1 run to extend their lead to 8-3. After a timeout, the Raiders managed to reduce the gap with a brief 4-1 run, including kills by Emma Westphal and Maddy Sampson, bringing the score to 9-7. However, the Mountaineers regained control and widened the lead to 23-14. Northwestern made efforts to rally, but EOU secured the set at 25-15.

In the third set, Eastern Oregon once again established an early lead 6-2. The Raiders responded with a series of points, including a kill by Stella Winterfeld, narrowing the gap to 7-6. The Mountaineers extended their advantage to 20-17, prompting the Raiders to call a timeout. Another push by Northwestern to close the gap, but the Mountaineers maintained their lead, concluding the set at 25-22.
