Darnold, Kabongo Net Goals in Home Draw

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Northwestern men's soccer team and Upper Iowa battled to a 2-2 draw at the NWC Soccer Complex on Friday, with both teams scoring once in each half.

Upper Iowa took an early lead with a goal by Julian Mesen in the third minute, assisted by James Moody. The Red Raiders had multiple attempts to respond, including a blocked shot by Emerson Brazones and a saved shot by Drew Darnold in the sixth minute. A red card in the 24th minute, led to a penalty kick attempt by Darnold, which went off the post and kept the score at 1-0. The Raiders eventually equalized in the 40th minute with a goal by Darnold, assisted by Jovany Kabongo, ending the first half tied at 1-1.

Upper Iowa regained the lead in the 55th minute when Gerardo Romo scored his first goal of the season. The Raiders responded quickly, equalizing in the 58th minute with a goal from Kabongo on the feed by Juan Miranda. Late chances were put together from both sides, but the score remained an even 0-0 after 90 minutes.

  • It was the second goal in as many matches for the freshman.
  • Drew Darnold netted the seventh goal of his collegiate career and first of the season.
