Metzger Receives GPAC A.O. Duer Award

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Northwestern volleyball student-athlete Zavyr Metzger has been named the female A.O. Duer Award recipient for the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC), the conference office announced this morning.

A nursing major from Larchwood, Iowa, Metzger had another dominant year in the middle, leading the country in blocks per set (1.75) and total blocks (198). She led the Raiders to the top blocking average in the NAIA (3.18), putting up 198 total blocks to bring her career total to 437 ahead of her senior year. Her career blocks total currently ranks seventh in Northwestern history. Metzger was also named an NAIA All-American for the first time in her career, being named to the NAIA and AVCA Second Team and was the GPAC's Co-Defender of the Year.

"Zavyr lives out a servant-leader mindset, always putting others before herself," head coach Kyle Van Den Bosch stated. "She is highly respected by both her teammates and coaches, serving as one of our program's most influential leaders. Her work ethic is contagious; her teammates see her dedication and strive to model it in their own lives."

In the classroom, Metzger was honored as a College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-America First Team selection for the second consecutive year, was a CSC Academic All-District selection, and compiled a 3.99 GPA.

Metzger becomes Northwestern's first Duer award winner since wrestling's Luke Jenness in 2022.

ABOUT THE A.O. DUER AWARD
The A.O. Duer award was named in honor of the NAIA's former executive secretary who served the association for 26 years. The award has been annually presented since 1967 to one male and one female junior student-athlete in any sport who has excelled in scholarship, character, and citizenship.

To be considered for the award, the student-athlete must have a registrar-certified cumulative GPA of at least 3.75 (on a 4.0 scale) and must have attained junior standing academically. The selection is based on a culmination of scholarship, character, citizenship, and playing ability.

Metzger has been forwarded for the NAIA A.O. Duer Award ballot as the GPAC nominee. The NAIA is set to release the national award recipients in September.
