Raiders Win Three to Punch Ticket to GPAC Championship

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – Facing elimination three times today, the No. 10-ranked Red Raider softball team cruised to three wins in the GPAC tournament. Northwestern will play for its second consecutive GPAC tournament title on a date to be determined.

How It Happened
The long ball was on full display with six total home runs as Northwestern took down Dakota Wesleyan 12-4.

The Red Raiders and the Tigers each scored a run in the first inning. Sydney Jacobs led off with a double to center field and later scored on a base hit by Gwen Mikkelsen, tying the game at 1–1. In the fourth inning, the Raiders took the lead with Tatum Schmalbeck's two-run homer, her fifth of the year, moving ahead 3–1 after the fourth.

In the fifth inning, the Tigers responded with two solo home runs to knot it back at 3-3. Northwestern countered effectively, with Jacobs scoring on Chloe Gallegos' single and Mikkelsen hitting a two-run homer. The inning continued with Ravyn Krachey and Schmalbeck scoring on a throwing error, extending the lead to 8–3.

The Raiders continued their offensive momentum in the sixth inning. A sacrifice fly by Mikkelsen scored Charli Bomgaars, followed by Krachey's RBI single. Jori Hajek's double added two more runs, securing a 12–4 advantage and ending the game in six.

GAME NOTES:
  • Gwen Mikkelsen and Tatum Schmalbeck each launched a two-run home run.
  • Mikkelsen picked up two hits and drove in four runs. She is two RBIs away from her single-season career-high.
  • Schmalbeck was a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk and three runs.
  • Sydney Jacobs collected two doubles.
  • Kate Kralik earned her 23rd win of the year with a two-strikeout performance in 1.1 innings.

How It Happened
The Red Raiders began the game by taking an early lead in the first inning. Sydney Jacobs walked and advanced to third on subsequent plays before Chloe Gallegos drove in a run with a single to left center, making it 1-0.

In the second inning, the Tigers tied the game with a solo homer. The Raiders responded quickly as Ravyn Krachey hit a solo homer to left center, her second of the day, restoring the lead at 2-1.

The fourth inning saw both teams add to their scores. Doane evened the score with a solo home run. However, Jori Hajek answered with a solo homer of her own, giving the home side a 3-2 advantage.

The Red Raiders extended their lead in the fifth inning. Gwen Mikkelsen doubled and scored from second on a single by Gallegos, who advanced to second on an error, pushing the score to 4-2.

In the final innings, Northwestern's pitching and defense held the Tigers scoreless. The sixth saw Doane threaten with two hits, but they failed to score any runs. The Raiders maintained their lead, securing a 4-2 victory.

How It Happened
The Red Raiders advanced to the championship series with a convincing win over Doane, their third win of the day.

Northwestern took an early lead in the first inning against the Tigers, with Gwen Mikkelsen contributing a single and later scoring on a hit by Tatum Schmalbeck. Chloe Gallegos also crossed home plate following an error, putting the Raiders ahead 2–0 after the first inning.

In the second, the Raiders extended their lead significantly with a nine-run burst. Charli Bomgaars and Sydney Jacobs both walked and scored on a single by Mikkelsen. Gallegos followed with a single that brought in two more runs. Schmalbeck then homered, adding two RBIs to her tally. The inning continued with Ravyn Krachey and Jori Hajek contributing to the score, ballooning the lead to 11-1.

The Tigers managed to score a run in the second inning on an error, but the Raiders' defense held them scoreless in the third and fourth innings. Despite the Tigers scoring an unearned run in the fifth, the Raiders maintained control throughout the game on their way to a five-inning decision.
