Raiders Come Up Short in Des Moines

DES MOINES, Iowa – In a non-conference, top-25 matchup, No. 7 Northwestern fell to No. 25 Grand View in both games of the doubleheader.

How It Happened
The Grand View softball team defeated Northwestern 9-5, highlighted by a decisive five-run sixth inning.

The Red Raiders faced the Vikings in a matchup where the action began in the first inning with the Vikings taking an early lead.

After surrendering a run in the first, the Raiders responded in the third as Ravyn Krachey hit a solo home run to left field, leveling the score at 1-1. However, the Vikings regained momentum in the bottom of the third with three runs, establishing a 4-1 lead.

The Raiders made a push in the fifth inning when Gwen Mikkelsen hit a two-run homer to left field, bringing the score to 4-3. The momentum continued in the sixth, with the Raiders scoring twice more. Charli Bomgaars reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Cassidy Gors to score, and Mikkelsen followed with an RBI single. Despite these efforts, the Vikings had a strong sixth inning, scoring five runs.

Ultimately, the Raiders were unable to close the gap in the seventh inning, with Grand View securing a 9-5 victory. The Raiders recorded six hits and two errors, while the Vikings had nine hits and one error.

How It Happened
Northwestern made a valiant effort in an 11-10 loss to No. 25 Grand View

In the first inning, the Vikings took an early lead with five runs, highlighted by a home run, setting the score at 5-0. The Raiders' defense then held strong in the second and third innings, preventing further scoring by the Vikings.

The Raiders broke through with a run in the fourth when Ashtyn Billings singled, driving in Cassidy Gors, making it 5-1. The fifth inning saw a surge from the Raiders, as Aly Vortherms doubled in Chloe Gallegos, followed by a two-run homer by Jori Hajek. Later, Sydney Jacobs' sacrifice fly brought Gors home, leveling the score at 5-5.

The sixth inning featured another offensive burst from the Raiders. Hajek hit a grand slam, to bring it to 9-7. The Raiders added a crucial run in the seventh inning with an RBI triple by Billings to make it 10-9.

However, the Vikings surged back with a walkoff RBI double to take down the Raiders 11-10.
