Mavericks Pull Away Late Against Raiders

(Orange City, IA) - Northwestern hosted Division II program Minnesota State, Mankato in a non-conference matchup, where the Mavericks would score eight runs in the top of the ninth to pull away in 18-2 contest.

In the first inning, MSU jumped to a 4-0 lead, highlighted by a three-run home run. They added another run in the second inning with an RBI single, extending their lead to 5-0. The Raiders' pitching change in the third inning saw no runs from the Mavericks, but the home team remained scoreless through the fourth inning. Northwestern's first breakthrough came in the fifth inning when Kevin Rubio doubled and later scored on a wild pitch, making it 6-1. MSU extended their lead in the sixth inning with a three-run rally, but a solo home run by Tyler Schroeder in the seventh inning added a second run for Northwestern, bringing the score to 9-2. The Mavericks scored eight runs in the ninth inning, widening the gap significantly. Despite a late single by Garbers in the bottom of the ninth, the Raiders could not add to their tally, concluding the game with an 18-2 result in favor of MSU.

Game Notes:
  • Tyler Schroeder went 1-for-1 at the plate with his first career homerun
  • Luke Terpstra pitched two innings, allowing one run and delivering two strikeouts
  • Northwestern struggled batting with just six hits
