ORANGE CITY, Iowa – Northwestern opened its weekend of GPAC play with a split against the Morningside Mustangs on Friday.

GAME 1: MSIDE 6, NWC 1

Loss: Drew Dykstra (6-2)

How It Happened
Morningside pounced on the Raiders in the first inning, hitting a two-run home run to left and adding one more on an RBI double to make it 3-0. The Raiders were unable to answer in the bottom half, leaving a runner on base.

The fourth inning saw the Raiders get on the scoreboard as Devin Dirkx reached on an error and advanced to third on a single by Grant Guidry. An RBI groundout on a close play at first for Jack Craig allowed Dirkx to score, cutting the deficit to 3-1 after the frame.

The Mustangs extended their lead in the sixth inning with three more runs, using a series of base hits and a sacrifice fly to extend their lead to 6-1.

GAME 2: NWC 7, MSIDE 5
Pitching Decisions
Win: Peyton Montecinos (4-1)
Loss: J. Pratt (1-3)
Save: Brody Ayers (9)

How It Happened
After Morningside put three up in the visitors' half of the first, the Red Raiders responded with a strong offensive display, scoring four runs in their half. Luke Wroblewski scored the first run on Grant Guidry's double, followed by Grant Rychnovsky's advancement and eventual scoring on a wild pitch. Jack Craig later reached on an error, further fueling the rally, and Ranier Castillo's walk brought home Rychnovsky. Kevin Rubio's sacrifice fly allowed Craig to score, giving the Raiders a 4-3 lead after the first inning.

The fifth inning saw the Raiders extend their lead with Rubio hitting a two-run homer, the first of his collegiate career, bringing Craig across the plate and solidifying their advantage. They led 6-3 through five innings.

In the sixth, Wroblewski doubled and was brought home on Devin Dirkx's single, adding another run to the Raiders' total, making it 7-3.

Despite the Mustangs adding runs in the sixth and seventh innings, the Raiders' defense held firm, preventing further scoring opportunities for the visitors. After Morningside put two runners on to begin the ninth, Brody Ayers struck out the final two batters to record the pressure save.
