Raiders Close Weekend with Three Wins

HASTINGS, Neb. – Northwestern scored 31 runs to sweep today's doubleheader at Hastings, winning the weekend series 3-1.

How It Happened
The Red Raiders took an early lead in the second inning when Grant Rychnovsky tripled and was driven in by Jack Craig's single, putting the Raiders on the board with a 1-0 lead. Hastings countered in the bottom half with a run of their own, tying the game at 1-1 after scoring on an error.

In the third inning, the Raiders regained the lead as Isaac Short singled and advanced on an error, later scoring on a Brody Ayers' double, making it 2-1. The momentum continued into the fourth inning, with the Raiders capitalizing on errors and a key triple by Luke Wroblewski, scoring five runs to extend the lead to 7-1.

Hastings narrowed the gap in the fifth inning with a four-run rally, highlighted a two-RBI single, closing the score to 7-6. However, the Raiders responded in the sixth inning with a six-run outburst, featuring Grant Guidry's two-RBI single and multiple contributions throughout the lineup, pushing the Raiders ahead 13-6.

The Raiders defense held firm in the later innings, preventing any further scoring from Hastings. The game concluded with a 13-6 victory for the Raiders, showcasing a strong offensive performance and effective late-inning pitching to secure the win.

How It Happened
Northwestern struck first when Jack Craig singled to center field, driving in Bryce Click, who had earlier stolen a base, putting the Raiders up 1-0. The Broncos responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning, capitalizing on a triple and a throwing error to take a 2-1 lead.

In the second inning, the Raiders regained control as Kevin Rubio tripled to right field and scored on a wild pitch. Dirkx contributed an RBI single, bringing home Luke Wroblewski who had advanced on a failed pickoff attempt. The Red Raiders ended the inning ahead, 3-2.

The fifth inning was pivotal for the Raiders, as they exploded for nine runs. Grant Guidry and Grant Rychnovsky set the stage with consecutive singles, followed by Craig and Ranier Castillo, who each had RBI singles. The inning continued with Click and Rubio contributing an RBI walk and single, respectively. Rychnovsky added two more RBIs with a single up the middle, while Craig capped the inning with a two-RBI single to increase the Raiders' lead to 13-3.

The Raiders maintained their offensive momentum in the seventh inning. Wroblewski walked and was driven in by Guidry's single. Consecutive hits and a wild pitch facilitated additional runs, with Castillo and Braydon Beelner each adding an RBI, extending the Raiders' lead to 18-3. The Broncos managed to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Raiders secured an 18-5 victory with a strong performance at the plate.
