Softball Sweeps Morningside in Home Tilt

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The No. 7-ranked Red Raider softball team remained unbeaten in GPAC play, sweeping the Morningside Mustangs at home on Wednesday.

How It Happened
In the second inning, the Raiders capitalized on a series of opportunities to take a 3-0 lead. It began with Chloe Gallegos and Maddie Kvatek hitting consecutive singles, followed by a walk to Tatum. Schmalbeck. An error by the pitcher allowed Gallegos to score the first run, and a wild pitch brought Kvatek home. Sydney Jacobs then delivered an RBI single, driving in Schmalbeck to cap the three-run inning.

The following innings saw the Red Raiders maintain their defensive strength, keeping Morningside scoreless through the fifth inning.

In the sixth inning, the Raiders added an insurance run to their lead, making it 4-0. Ashtyn Billings started the inning with a single, and Cassidy Gors followed with another single, advancing Billings to third. Bomgaars then singled, bringing Billings home to score.

Morningside managed to get on the scoreboard in the seventh inning with a solo home run. Despite this late effort, Northwestern's early lead and consistent defense throughout the game secured a 4-1 victory.

How It Happened
In the first inning, the game began with both teams scoring a run apiece. The Mustangs scored on a fielder's choice, while the Raiders' Gwen Mikkelsen tied the game with a solo home run, making the score 1-1.

During the third inning, the Raiders capitalized on Morningside's defensive error. Sydney Jacobs scored on an error, followed by Berkley Johannsen and Maddie Kvatek driving in additional runs with a double and single, respectively. The Raiders led 4-2 after this productive inning.

In the fourth inning, the Raiders extended their lead to 6-2. Mikkelsen's double and Kvatek's subsequent single brought in two more runs, highlighting the Raiders' efficient offense.

The sixth inning saw the Raiders adding another run to their tally. Aly Vortherms, who was pinch-running for Mikkelsen, scored a wild play at home off Kvatek's double, cementing the team's lead. The Raiders maintained their advantage and secured a 7-3 victory over the Mustangs.
