Northwestern Launches Four Home Runs in Doubleheader Sweep

OMAHA, Neb. – The Red Raiders used the long ball to extend its winning streak to 13 games, sweeping College of Saint Mary on Friday.

How It Happened
Jori Hajek homered to left center to take an early lead as Northwestern won 4-0 in the first game of today's doubleheader.

After Hajek's second-inning solo shot to take a 1-0 lead, Cassidy Gors followed with a single and a stolen base. However, CSM held firm and kept their deficit to a run heading into the bottom half.

The fifth inning was pivotal for the Raiders as they extended their lead to 4-0. The inning commenced with Charli Bomgaars drawing a walk and stealing second. Ashtyn Billings followed with a bunt single, and Sydney Jacobs drove in Bomgaars with an infield single. Gwen Mikkelsen reached on a fielder's choice, bringing home another run, and Aly Vortherms scored on consecutive errors by the opposing catcher and center fielder.

The Red Raiders' pitching and defense held strong throughout the game, preventing the Flames from scoring. In the seventh inning, Kate Kralik faced pinch hitters but managed to strike out the side, securing the victory with a final score of 4-0.

GAME NOTES:
  • Jori Hajek hit her first home run of the season, going 2-for-4.
  • Ashtyn Billings collected three hits in four plate appearances.
  • Billings also stole two bases.

How It Happened
The Red Raiders scored early and often to pull off a dominant 18-4 win at College of Saint Mary. The win marked their fourth year in a row with at least 30 wins.

Northwestern started strong in the first inning with Sydney Jacobs walking and promptly stealing second. Gwen Mikkelsen's double brought Jacobs home, setting the stage for a scoring run. Chloe Gallegos and Jori Hajek added to the tally with consecutive RBIs, while Tatum Schmalbeck's double drove in two more runs, contributing to an impressive eight-run inning.

The momentum continued in the second inning for the Raiders. Highlighted by Schmalbeck's grand slam, the Red Raiders added another seven runs to their lead. This powerful hitting was further bolstered by Berkley Johannsen's solo homer, pushing the score to 15-0 after two innings.

In the fourth, the Raiders extended their lead with a three-run homer by Mikkelsen. This pushed the score to 18-4, as Northwestern capitalized on an error and a single to set the stage for Mikkelsen's decisive hit.

Despite a quiet fifth inning, the Raiders maintained their commanding lead. The defense held firm to close out the game with an 18-4 victory, ending the game in five.

GAME NOTES:
  • Tatum Schmalbeck drove in a career-high six runs, four in part to her grand slam in the second.
  • The grand slam marked Schmalbeck's first home run of her career.
  • Berkley Johannsen also hit her first career long ball to extend the lead in the second inning.
  • The Raiders homered three times, their most in a game since 2022.
  • Gwen Mikkelsen drove in five runs, notching a 3-for-4 day with a home run.
  • Ravyn Krachey went 2-for-2.
  • Sydney Jacobs went 2-for-3 with two walks and a steal.
