Raiders Slide By Mount Marty

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – After this week's winter weather moved the Raiders' home site to the Sanford Diamonds in Sioux Falls, Northwestern eked out a sweep over Mount Marty on Saturday.

GAME 1: NWC 7, MMU 3
Pitching Decisions
Win: Kate Kralik (13-3)
Loss: M. Gray (4-7)
Save: None

How It Happened
Northwestern started strong in the first inning, with Ashtyn Billings earning a walk and Jori Hajek hitting a double that brought Billings home for the first run. The team capitalized on an error as Hajek scored, ending the inning with a 2-0 lead over the Lancers.

In the second inning, the Red Raiders added to their lead. Cassidy Gors reached base with a walk and was later driven in by a double from Gwen Mikkelsen, making the score 3-0. Northwestern's offense continued to pressure Mount Marty, though the inning ended with two runners left on base.

The third inning saw the Raiders extend their lead again. With Tatum Schmalbeck and Sydney Jacobs reaching base, a fielder's choice by Gors allowed both runners to score, pushing the advantage to 5-1. The team's effective base running and timely hits were key to maintaining their momentum.

In the fourth inning, the Red Raiders further solidified their lead. A series of strategic plays, including a groundout RBI by Ravyn Krachey and a sacrifice fly by Gors, brought in two more runs, setting the score at 7-1.

Mount Marty added two runs in the sixth but left the bases loaded, effectively ending the game in a 7-3 decision in favor of Northwestern.

GAME NOTES:
  • Tatum Schmalbeck went 2-for-3 at the plate, scoring two runs and taking a walk.
  • Schmalbeck also stole two bases and pitched a scoreless inning.
  • Sydney Jacobs went 2-for-2 with a steal and a walk.

GAME 2: NWC 8, MMU 7
Pitching Decisions
Win: Tatum Schmalbeck (1-0)
Loss: M. Graunke (2-4)

How It Happened
The Red Raiders opened the game strongly in the first inning, scoring six runs. The scoring was initiated by Gwen Mikkelsen's two-run homer just inside the foul pole, bringing Ashtyn Billings home. The inning continued with additional runs from Chloe Gallegos, Sydney Jacobs, Jori Hajek, and Maddie Kvatek, capitalizing on a series of walks and errors, which gave the Raiders an early lead of 6-0.

In the third inning, the Raiders added another run to their lead. Mikkelsen contributed again with an RBI double that scored Cassidy Gors, extending the score to 7-0. This maintained the Raiders' momentum as they continued to control the pace of the game.

During the fourth inning, the Raiders managed to score again, this time from Aly Vortherms. After pinch running for Tatum Schmalbeck, Vortherms was driven home by Kvatek's base hit, bringing the score to 8-2.

In the final innings, despite a late surge from the Lancers scoring multiple runs in the fifth and sixth innings, the Raiders' early lead proved decisive. Northwestern's defense held firm in the seventh inning, highlighted by Schmalbeck's solid outing in the circle to pick up a 1-2-3 seventh.

GAME NOTES:
  • Gwen Mikkelsen hit her fourth home run of the year and 19th of her career.
  • Mikkelsen had a perfect 3-for-3 day, also notching a double and single.
  • Maddie Kvatek went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and RBI.
  • Ashtyn Billings drove in a run, going 1-for-3.
  • Sydney Jacobs took two walks and scored a run.
