Raiders Fight to the Finish in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Northwestern erased a 17-point deficit to take the lead late, but Georgetown (Ky.) survived the Red Raider comeback in a 73-70 decision.

Northwestern started strong with Jesse Van Kalsbeek scoring the first points at 18:48, setting the team on a competitive path. Alex Van Kalsbeek contributed significantly with layups and assists, and Jalen Langsy added a three-pointer at 11:22, putting the Red Raiders ahead briefly. Despite the Raiders' efforts, including Zach LaFave's three-pointer at 1:14, the Tigers capitalized on their opportunities and took a 48-33 lead by the end of the half.

"I was really proud of our guys. I don't think we had the best first half obviously, but our guys really showed a lot of roots, a lot of character in the second half," head coach Kris Korver stated.

In the second half, Northwestern demonstrated a robust comeback, erasing a 17-point deficit to take the lead late in the game. Alex Van Kalsbeek contributed significantly with multiple key baskets, including a layup at 2:45 to bring the score to 64-67, and another at 2:04 to narrow the gap to 66-67. He then put the Raiders ahead 68-67 with a crucial layup at the 1:30 mark. Zach LaFave also made an impact with a crucial free throw at the 34-second mark, giving the Raiders a brief lead of 69-67. Despite a late three-pointer by Georgetown's Tae Dozier with 21 seconds to go to put the Tigers ahead, the Red Raiders' efforts in the paint and consistent scoring kept the game competitive until the final seconds.

"We love wearing that Raider jersey, so we just said to those guys, don't take it off tonight. We were super proud of their effort in the second half," Korver added.
