How It Happened
Northwestern blasted two home runs in the second inning to take the early advantage in the conference opener.

The Red Raiders opened the scoring in the second inning with a home run by Chloe Gallegos to left center, putting them on the board. The momentum continued as Maddie Kvatek followed with a homer to catcher, bringing in two more runs after Jori Hajek's single. The inning was capped off by Ashtyn Billings scoring on an error, giving the Raiders a 4-0 lead.

In the third inning, the Red Raiders maintained their lead with strategic plays. Gallegos singled and was replaced by Reese Marek as a pinch runner, who advanced to third on a sacrifice fly by Kvatek. Although no runs were scored in that inning, the Raiders' ability to advance runners kept pressure on the Broncos.

The seventh inning saw the Raiders extend their lead further. Gwen Mikkelsen singled up the middle, and pinch runner Aly Vortherms advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Gallegos then singled to left center, driving in Vortherms for an insurance run, resulting in a 5-0 advantage.

Throughout the game, the Red Raiders' defense held strong, preventing the Broncos from scoring. Kate Kralik allowed only two hits and managed to keep Hastings off the scoreboard, securing a shutout victory for the Raiders.

How It Happened
Clutch hitting from Gwen Mikkelsen and Chloe Gallegos rallied the Raiders to a comeback win in the second game of the twin bill.

The Raiders opened the scoring in the first inning when Ashtyn Billings crossed home plate, capitalizing on a fielding error from the Broncos. Despite not recording a hit in the inning, the Raiders took advantage of defensive miscues to establish an early 1-0 lead.

In the second inning, the Raiders added to their lead. Tatum Schmalbeck reached third base on a wild pitch and was driven home by Billings' single up the middle, bringing the score to 2-0. The Raiders' aggressive base running and opportunistic play were evident as they capitalized on errors and wild pitches.

The Broncos responded in the third inning with two runs, leveling the score at 2-2. However, the Raiders' defense held firm, preventing further scoring by recording two groundouts and a strikeout in the subsequent innings. The game remained close through the middle innings, with the Broncos adding a run in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead.

The pivotal moment came in the seventh inning for the Raiders. Cassidy Gors singled and stole second to set up the scoring opportunity. Gwen Mikkelsen and C. Gallegos delivered key hits, driving in three runs to reclaim the lead, ultimately securing a 5-3 victory.

GAME NOTES:
  • Gwen Mikkelsen collected a hit, an RBI, a walk, and a run.
  • Chloe Gallegos drove in the game winning runs with her lone hit in the seventh.
  • Ashtyn Billings scored twice and drove in a run.
  • Cassidy Gors went 1-for-3 with a stolen base.
  • Kate Kralik collected her 10th win of the year, striking out four batters in 2.1 innings of work.
