How It Happened
Northwestern opened conference play on Thursday afternoon, holding on to an early lead to pick up the 3-2 decision.

The Red Raiders began the game with a strong start, scoring two runs in the first inning. Grant Rychnovsky walked, and Devin Dirkx followed with a single, setting up Grant Guidry, who also singled. The sequence was capped by Ranier Castillo reaching first on an error, allowing Dirkx to score. Jack Craig then knocked a base hit, bringing in Guidry for another unearned run, opening the game with a 2-0 lead after the visitors' half.

In the second inning, the Raiders added two more hits but couldn't convert them into runs, leaving two players on base. Meanwhile, the Lancers were unable to capitalize on their opportunities, recording one hit but no runs in the same inning. The third through fifth innings saw both teams struggle to add to their totals, holding the score at 2-1.

The final frame saw the Raiders extending their lead with Guidry driving in Luke Wroblewski with a single after Wroblewski reached on a base hit earlier. This unearned run increased their lead to 3-1. The Lancers responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the seventh, but ultimately the Raiders held on for a 3-2 victory, finishing with nine hits in the ballgame.

  • Drew Dykstra threw a complete game, striking out seven and improving to 3-0.
  • Grant Guidry collected two hits, scored a run, and recorded an RBI.
  • Jack Craig had a two-hit day with one driven in.

How It Happened
Northwestern moved to 2-0 in GPAC play in the evening bill of Thursday's doubleheader, coming back from a 3-1 deficit to earn the win.

The Red Raiders broke the scoreless tie in the fourth with a series of well-timed hits. Devin Dirkx singled to left field and later advanced on a walk by Jack Craig. Ranier Castillo's single loaded the bases, setting the stage for Drew Dykstra, who drove in Dirkx with an RBI base hit, giving the Raiders a 1-0 lead. However, the Lancers responded in the bottom half with three runs, taking a 3-1 lead by the end of the inning.

In the fifth inning, the Raiders narrowed the gap to a run. Brody Ayers singled and advanced to third on a passed ball and a balk. Luke Wroblewski followed with a single to drive in Ayers, cutting the deficit to 3-2.

The Raiders capitalized on the Lancers' errors in the sixth inning to seize the lead. After Craig and Castillo reached base on walks, Tyler Schroeder reached on an error that allowed both runners to score, putting Northwestern ahead. A sacrifice fly by Ayers brought in another unearned run, extending the lead to 5-3.

The final inning saw strong defensive plays from the Raiders, preventing the Lancers from mounting a comeback. Ayers, who took over pitching duties, closed the game by retiring the side in order, securing the 5-3 victory.

Game Notes:
  • Devin Dirkx went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
  • Brody Ayers collected his fifth save of the year with one inning of hitless work, also picking up an RBI at the plate.
  • Drew Dykstra notched two hits, an RBI, and a run.
  • Jack Craig drew two walks and scored a run.
  • Grant Rychnovsky tossed four strikeouts in the start.
