Northwestern Puts Dordt on the Ropes in Overtime

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – Northwestern battled top-ranked Dordt to an overtime finish, falling 86-80 in Sioux Center.

Northwestern started with a quick two points from Molly Schany at 9:44, but the Defenders responded with a strong offensive performance, establishing a 20-point lead by the end of the quarter. Ashtyn Wobig contributed by making all four of her free throws, while Hali Anderson added a layup at 1:30 to help the Raiders reach double digits.

Northwestern outscored Dordt 26-13 in the second quarter, closing the gap significantly. The quarter featured a strong performance from Wobig, who made two from beyond the arc and a pair of free throws. Lexie Van Kekerix also contributed with two three-pointers, while Anderson provided key assists, helping the Red Raiders cut the lead to just three points by the end of the quarter.

The Raiders showed resilience out of the break with Wobig scoring a jumper and adding two free throws to narrow the gap. Schany contributed significantly with a defensive rebound and a layup, bringing the score to 40-46 at one point. Despite the Defenders extending their lead to 12 points at 3:46, Anderson hit a three-pointer and Maddie Pottebaum added a layup, closing the quarter with a score of 50-59 in favor of Dordt.

In the fourth quarter, Northwestern outscored Dordt 25-16, closing the gap in the final minutes. Anderson and Wobig each contributed significantly, with Anderson hitting a three at 0:48 to bring the score to 67-72. Allison Piercy made a crucial triple with two seconds left to tie the game at 72-72 before Van Kekerix hit a last-second three to secure a 75-75 tie at the end of regulation.

Overtime saw Dordt take an early lead with Ellie Lems and Janie Van Donge each scoring jumpers in the paint. The Raiders responded with Anderson contributing key points, including a jumper at 2:15 and two successful free throws late in the period, narrowing the gap. Despite these efforts, the Defenders maintained their advantage to win their 23rd game of the year.

  • Ashtyn Wobig scored a career-high 22 points, also recording two steals.
  • Hali Anderson added 19, also pulling down six boards with five assists and three steals.
  • Lexie Van Kekerix made four threes, including the overtime-forcing shot, scoring 16 points.
  • Molly Schany was also in double figures with 13 points and eight rebounds.
  • Northwestern made 10 threes, the fourth time this year with 10 or more makes from beyond the arc.
  • It was the first overtime game of the year for Northwestern.
