Raiders Fall to Top 15 Opponent

OLATHE, Kan. — Northwestern College faced a tough outing against #11 MidAmerica Nazarene University, falling 78-54 as the Pioneers took advantage of 28 points off turnovers. The Red Raiders held their ground with eight steals and 31 points in the paint.

The game kicked off with a spark from the Raiders, thanks to an early three-pointer by Allison Piercy, set up by Margo Schuiteman after a steal. The Raiders hustled hard on defense with two early steals but were hindered by eight turnovers that slowed their momentum.

MNU found their groove with sharp shooting, especially from beyond the arc, which fueled their scoring surge. Emily TerWee chipped in with points at the free-throw line and a solid two-pointer, but the Pioneers' relentless scoring inside and from deep pushed their lead further. The first quarter wrapped with MNU ahead 27-11, leaving Northwestern searching for answers heading into the next quarter.

In the second quarter, the Raiders battled to close the gap, with Ashtyn Wobig making her presence felt in the paint. They showed determination, with Piercy grabbing key rebounds to keep the offense alive. Despite their tenacity, turnovers proved costly, allowing the Pioneers to widen their lead with smart assists and clutch shooting.

Northwestern refused to back down, highlighted by a three-pointer from Schuiteman and a gritty basket in the paint by Aubrey Metzger. Yet, MNU's steady scoring kept them firmly in control. The half ended with the Raiders trailing 46-28.

The third quarter saw the Raiders focusing on scoring inside, with TerWee delivering early in the paint. Though they showed flashes of promise with a block by Ellie Karolevitz and a steal by Jaelye Woudstra, MNU's offensive push, especially with second-chance points, kept them ahead.

Northwestern found a rhythm with a three-pointer from Karolevitz and a fast-break finish by Wobig, slicing into the deficit. Schuiteman added another three-pointer, and TerWee chipped in a late score, but the Pioneers' strong inside game kept them in control. The quarter ended with both teams adding 16 points, leaving the Raiders behind 62-44.

The final quarter began with a quick two-pointer by TerWee, assisted by Piercy, as the Raiders aimed to rally. However, MNU responded swiftly with back-to-back three-pointers by Aubrey Rogers, shifting the momentum.

Despite the Raiders' efforts, including a block by Schuiteman and offensive rebounds that led to second-chance points, turnovers thwarted their scoring runs. TerWee added four more points, including two from the line, in a bid to keep pace.

As the game wound down, Northwestern's defense forced a late turnover, highlighted by a steal from Aubrey Schwieso. But MNU held firm, closing the game with a 16-10 quarter advantage. The Raiders finished with a 78-54 loss.
