Men’s Hoops Hands Ave Maria First Loss With 105-77 Victory

KINGSPORT, Tenn. – The Red Raiders made a statement with a commanding 105-77 win over previously unbeaten Ave Maria (Fla.) on Saturday. Lighting up the scoreboard with precision from long range, the Raiders nailed seventeen of thirty-one three-point attempts.

Northwestern seized control from the get-go as Kaleb Booth set the tone with some clutch free throws, and Jesse Van Kalsbeek added a powerful dunk and a three-pointer to build an early lead. The Raiders' ball movement was a thing of beauty, dishing out ten assists and sinking eight three-pointers, fueling a scoring surge. On the defensive end, they were relentless, forcing nine turnovers and grabbing five steals, effectively throwing the Gyrenes off their rhythm.

The Raiders pushed their lead to a game-high fifteen points with just under six minutes left in the first half, thanks to a big three-pointer from Brennan Reid. The Raiders kept their shooting sharp, hitting fifty-two percent from the field, and wrapped up the half with a comfortable 50-37 lead, despite a late rally from Ave Maria.

As the second half kicked off, Northwestern kept their foot on the gas. Reid's and-one quickly widened the gap to 53-37. Booth kept the energy high with another three-pointer. The defense stayed tight, highlighted by Jalen Langsy's crucial steal that led to a fast-break layup and a free throw, boosting the score to 59-40.

The Raiders never let up, with Van Kalsbeek throwing down another dunk and Isaac Cordes hitting a key three-pointer midway through the half. The balanced offensive attack was front and center, with contributions from multiple players, including Manny Hammonds, who drained back-to-back three-pointers. Northwestern stretched their lead to as much as twenty-eight points late in the game, firmly in control.

As the clock wound down, the Raiders' offensive precision held up as Langsy capped off the game with a final three-pointer, sealing the score at 105-77.
