Strong Start Not Enough in GPAC Loss

ORANGE CITY, Iowa — Northwestern College fell to Concordia University, Nebraska on Saturday, 88-66, with the Bulldogs securing the victory through a dominant 48 points in the paint.

Northwestern opened the first quarter with a strong start, as Ashtyn Wobig sank an early 3-pointer off an assist from Kylie Foss, establishing an initial lead. The team maintained pressure through effective ball movement, assisting on six of their ten baskets. Margo Schuiteman contributed significantly with multiple successful layups, helping the team to briefly hold a four-point lead at 7:19.

Despite the Raiders' efforts, the Bulldogs managed to counter with a series of baskets, including a key 3-pointer by Ayla Roth at 2:24, which extended their lead. Northwestern responded with contributions from multiple players, keeping the game closely contested. The quarter concluded with Concordia leading 24-21.

Northwestern faced a challenging second quarter as the Bulldogs extended their lead. Northwestern's defensive efforts were highlighted by Kylie Foss, who secured two steals early in the quarter. Despite these efforts, Concordia capitalized on turnovers and went on a scoring run, highlighted by Raelyn Kelty's layup at 3:59, which helped them build a significant margin. Northwestern struggled to convert on their field goal attempts, going 5-for-16, and missed all four free-throw attempts.

In the latter part of the quarter, Maddie Pottebaum and Jenna Kluxdal contributed with crucial points, with Kluxdal scoring two late layups. However, the Bulldogs maintained pressure with effective shooting, including three successful 3-pointers. The quarter concluded with Concordia leading 43-31, as the Raiders aimed to regain momentum heading into the next quarter.

The third quarter began with the Bulldogs extending their lead, capitalizing on turnovers and defensive stops. The Raiders responded with a pair of 3-pointers from Allison Piercy, narrowing the gap to single digits briefly. Despite a period of strong defense and a series of successful free throws by Kluxdal, Northwestern faced challenges with turnovers, allowing Concordia to regain momentum.

In the latter part of the quarter, the Raiders continued to battle, with Schuiteman converting a layup and free throw to keep pressure on Concordia. However, the Bulldogs maintained their lead through consistent scoring. The quarter concluded with Concordia leading 64-49, as Northwestern looked to regroup for the final quarter.

Northwestern started the fourth quarter by responding to an early Bulldogs' layup with a layup from Schuiteman, assisted by Piercy. Wobig contributed with two successful free throws shortly after. Despite efforts, including a 3-pointer from Pottebaum and a jumper from Kluxdal, the Raiders trailed throughout the quarter.

Turnovers proved costly for Northwestern, with the Bulldogs capitalizing on steals to extend their lead. Piercy hit a 3-pointer to cut into the deficit, but the Bulldogs' consistent scoring maintained their advantage.
