Park City, Kansas – The Red Raiders put together a solid showing at the Falcon Open, highlighted by several strong performances across the elite and amateur divisions.
Six Raiders entered the elite division in their season opener. Sophomore Ethan Skogland battled through a tough bracket at 133, opening with a competitive 13-7 decision loss to #8 Roman De La Cruz of (Oklahoma Wesleyan University). He rebounded in dominant fashion, securing three straight wins — a 14-1 major decision over Jayden Nowell (Ottawa University), a 12-2 major decision over Isaac Perez (Friends University), and a 7-3 decision over teammate
Kane Butrick before falling 8-3 to Abraham Pablo (Arizona Christian University) to close out a strong day and finish with a 3-2 record on the day.
Sophomore
Kane Butrick also competed at 133, dropping his opening bout to #22 Allan Hendricks (Embry-Riddle) by an 11-1 major decision. He would pick up 6-0 decision over Kaven Bartlett (Newman University) before falling to Skogland.
At 141, Senior
Noah Parmelee started hot, earning a 12-3 major decision over Jake Swensen (Avila) and a 12-7 decision over Carter Krier (Friends University) to reach the quarterfinals where he fell to Yoshiya Funakoshi (Embry-Riddle). Despite a valiant effort he would fall 8-4 to Evan Rodriguez (Cowley CC) to close out his tournament.
Senior
Johnny Burnette turned in a solid performance at 149, opening with a first-period fall (2:39) over Trent Moses (Newman). He then lost a 14-1 major decision to Christian Lopez (Embry-Riddle). On the back side of the bracket Burnette went on to notch a 10-3 decision over Thomas Vasquez (Friends University) and a 14-4 major decision over Tristen Brown (Doane) before falling to Gabe Maki (Central Oklahoma) to end his tournament.
Freshman
Aiden Smith dropped his opening bout by a 14-1 major decision to Reid Foster (Grand View). He would go on to pick up convincing 16-2 major decision win over Ihi Cobb-Adams (Doane), before bowing out against Sammy Mendoza (GVU) in a 12-3 major decision loss.
At 157,
Cade Braun faced a challenging field, falling in his opening match to #9 John Wiley (Oklahoma City University). He bounced back with a 13-4 major decision victory over Devin Weber (Grand View) before dropping his final bout to Brandon Bollinger (Missouri Baptist University)
Thirteen Raiders were also battling it out in the amateur division. Sophomore
Taye Jordan went 3-2 on the day at 125lbs, recording a fall and a major decision. At 184lbs, sophomore
Carter Peterson went 2-2 on the day with 2 falls finishing top six. At 197lbs, freshman
Joel Arias finished his first collegiate competition 4-2 on the day. Junior heavyweight
Logan Ash had himself a day going 4-1 on the day with 3 falls and a 3
rd place finish. Freshmen
