Raiders Fall in First GPAC Game of the Season

CRETE, Neb. - IN a tightly contested matchup, Northwestern couldn't pull ahead of the Doane Tigers as they bounced back in the second half to defeat the Raiders 75-71.

Northwestern opened the game with strong offensive execution, establishing an early presence in the paint with 24 points. Jesse Van Kalsbeek led the way with multiple successful shots, contributing significantly to the Raiders' scoring output. The team capitalized on fast-break opportunities and defensive stops, highlighted by Jalen Langsy's steal and subsequent layup at 16:46, keeping the momentum in their favor. Doane kept pace with five 3-pointers, briefly leading by as much as five points. However, the Raiders responded with efficient shooting, including a 3-pointer from Manny Hammonds at 10:48, reclaiming the advantage. Northwestern extended their lead to eight points at 4:23 with a 3-pointer from Brennan Reid. The half concluded with the Raiders holding a narrow lead of 39-37, despite a late 3-pointer from Doane's Jonan Claussen at the buzzer.

The Raiders' second half commenced with momentum as Mason Gerleman scored a layup, assisted by Van Kalsbeek, to extend their lead. Despite the Raiders' efforts, the Tigers responded, shifting leads multiple times throughout the half. Key plays included Langsy's fast-break layup and a crucial 3-pointer by Kaleb Booth with less than a minute remaining, briefly reclaiming the lead. As the half advanced, the Raiders struggled to maintain their advantage in the face of the Tigers' persistent scoring. Jesse Van Kalsbeek's contributions in the paint kept the game competitive, but the Tigers' late three-point play and free throws in the closing seconds secured their lead. the game came to an end with Northwestern trailing 75-71, after the Tigers outscored them by six points in the half.
