Northwestern Upends Clarke in Close Contest

DUBUQUE, Iowa – A late Clarke run did not stifle the No. 8-ranked Red Raider men's basketball team, as Northwestern won 91-88 on the road.

Northwestern opened the first half with a strong start, taking an early lead with a series of effective plays in the paint. Jesse Van Kalsbeek was instrumental, contributing multiple layups and free throws to help the Raiders maintain control. Despite some turnovers, the Red Raiders' defense managed to limit the Pride's scoring opportunities, with Manny Hammonds and Isaac Cordes making key steals.

As the half progressed, Northwestern extended their lead to nine points with just 38 seconds remaining, thanks to consistent scoring from both inside and beyond the arc. Clarke attempted to close the gap with a brief run, but the Red Raiders' efficient shooting and defensive stops kept them ahead. The half concluded with the Raiders leading 45-36.

In the second half, Northwestern maintained momentum with a strong start, highlighted by Van Kalsbeek's layup and Jalen Langsy's three-point play, pushing the score to 50-42. Despite the Pride closing the gap multiple times, the Raiders responded with key baskets, including a three-pointer from Hammonds at 13:30 and Langsy's consistent scoring. The Red Raiders built on these efforts to extend their lead, matching their largest lead of nine points with 12:02 in the game.

Clarke then responded by tying the game at 67 with 7:25 on the clock, later grabbing on to a slim lead that they held through the final media timeout. Trailing 80-75 with under three minutes to go, Hammonds nailed a three to cut the deficit to two before Langsy drained a shot from beyond the arc with two minutes left to make it 82-81. Hammonds gave the Raiders the lead again in the next possession, laying it in before another three-pointer by Hammonds at the one-minute mark put Northwestern ahead for good.
