Raiders Drop Defensive Battle on Homecoming

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – On a blustery day in Northwest Iowa, the Red Raiders fell a point short in a 10-9 loss to Hastings.

Northwestern began the opening quarter with an offensive drive from their 25-yard line, executing a series of short passes primarily from quarterback Colby Duncan. Despite moving the ball effectively with completions to Braeden Bosma and Sam Remmerde, the drive stalled on 4th and 1 at their own 48-yard line, resulting in a turnover on downs.

Hastings capitalized on the favorable field position, advancing to the Red Raiders' 4-yard line, but the defense held firm. Hastings settled for a 21-yard field goal by Colton Willmott, to take an early 3-0 lead.
Northwestern's second quarter began with a defensive stand, highlighted by Jackson Smythe's tackle for a loss. Following the three-and-out, their offense gained momentum with Duncan connecting with Casey for consecutive completions, advancing the ball deep into Hastings territory. This drive culminated in a successful 52-yard field goal by Jovany Kabongo, putting the Raiders ahead.

As Hastings attempted to respond, Northwestern's defense remained resolute, with Owen Lalumendre applying pressure that led to an intercepted pass by Trystin Voss. Although a penalty nullified the turnover, the Raiders' defense continued to hold firm, forcing a missed field goal attempt into the wind by Hastings. In the closing seconds of the quarter, Duncan orchestrated another drive, setting up Kabongo's impressive 58-yard field goal as time expired, extending Northwestern's lead to 6-3 at the half.

After Northwestern stopped Hastings near midfield on the initial drive of the second half, the Broncos pinned the Raiders at the two-yard line and managed to score on a turnover, as Wyatt Ryan picked off a pass inside the five and returned it for a touchdown. The extra point was good, extending Hastings' lead to 10-6.

Northwestern responded with a determined offensive drive starting from their own 26-yard line. Casey led the charge with a notable 28-yard rush, setting up the Raiders in scoring position. Though a false start penalty momentarily stalled momentum, Kabongo capped the drive with a successful 31-yard field goal as the quarter closed.

In the fourth, Hastings mounted a drive that advanced to the Raiders' 37-yard line, but the Northwestern defense held strong, with Smythe breaking up a crucial third-down pass, forcing a turnover on downs.

The Raiders took over at their own 37-yard line, with Duncan completing a 9-yard pass to Carson Ness. Despite moving into Hastings territory, the drive stalled, and a 65-yard field goal attempt by Kabongo fell just a few yards short. Hastings regained possession but was once again stopped by Northwestern's defense, notably with Jordan Carter's pass breakup on fourth down.

With less than three minutes remaining, the Raiders initiated a drive from their own 25-yard line. Duncan connected with Ness and Tanner Schouten for gains, but a missed 51-yard field goal attempt with time expiring sealed the final outcome.
