First Win of the Month for Northwestern

ORANGE CITY, Iowa - Friday saw an decisive early set comeback win but it was all Raider dominance from there on out as Northwestern gets another GPAC sweep over Hastings in the Bultman Center.

How It Happened

The first set between Northwestern and Hastings began with a tense back-and-forth exchange, as both teams alternated points early. The Broncos initially pulled ahead with a 5-2 lead, capitalizing on the Raiders' attack errors. The Red Raiders responded with a scoring run, narrowing the gap with consecutive kills from Maddy Sampson and Rylie Franken to tie the score at 8-8. Hastings managed to build a 24-20 lead, but Northwestern mounted a dramatic comeback with Zavyr Metzger contributing a crucial block and kill, ultimately closing the set on a 6-0 run to win 26-24.

Following an initial tie at 1-1, the Raiders capitalized on multiple errors by Hastings to advance the score to 3-1. Nyah Potthoff was crucial in this set, contributing assists on several kills, including by Emma Westphal and Sidney Oostra. Despite a brief rally by Hastings, Northwestern's steady pace sealed the set in favor of the Red Raiders.

In the third set, the Raiders secured a dominant early lead, with Maddy Sampson contributing three kills in the first five points, supported by assists from Liv Reitsma. The Broncos called a timeout at 6-1, but Northwestern extended their lead further to 13-7 after a service ace by Reitsma. Despite a brief rally from Hastings, the set concluded with two consecutive kills by Rylie Franken, both assisted by Jewel Bergstrom, for a 25-19 victory, securing the set for the Red Raiders.
