Northwestern Sweeps Dordt in Front of Home Crowd

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The No. 3-ranked Northwestern volleyball team hit .323 en route to a sweep of Dordt on Wednesday night.

NWC 3, DORDT 0 (26-24, 25-19, 25-16)

How It Happened
The first set was tightly contested battle, with neither team leading by more than two points for its entirety. Northwestern opened the scoring with a kill by Maddy Sampson, assisted by Liv Reitsma. Stella Winterfeld was a key player for the Red Raiders, contributing multiple kills, including one at a critical juncture to tie the score at 15-15. The Defenders responded with strong play, including service aces from Chloe Huisman and Peyton Poppema, helping them edge ahead at times. The set remained close throughout, with Northwestern taking a late 24-22 lead after a service ace by Winterfeld. Dordt fought back to tie the score at 24-24, but Emma Westphal secured the final two points for Northwestern with decisive kills, sealing the set 26-24.

Northwestern took control in the second set, securing a 25-19 victory with strong performances on both sides of the net. Rylie Franken contributed significantly with multiple blocks, including one to open the set and give the Raiders an early advantage. A crucial moment came when Northwestern capitalized on a series of errors by the Defenders, extending their lead to 20-17. Sampson and Winterfeld provided consistent offensive output, with Sampson notching several key kills, including the penultimate point from Reitsma's assist. The set concluded with an attack error by the Defenders, sealing the win for the Raiders.

The Raiders secured a decisive 25-16 victory in the third set, ending the match in strong fashion. The set was marked by a pivotal shift midway, as Northwestern went on a 5-0 run with the score tied 14-14. Winterfeld contributed significantly, recording a service ace and a key kill that extended the Raiders' lead to 16-14. Dordt called a timeout at this point, but Northwestern maintained momentum, with Reitsma serving an ace as part of another 5-0 run to end the match.
