Volleyball Takes Top-10 Matchup in Four Sets

SEWARD, Neb. – In a rematch of the last two GPAC Championship matches, Northwestern defeated Concordia in four sets at Friedrich Arena on Friday to maintain their unbeaten conference record. The win marked Northwestern's 40th consecutive win over GPAC opponents, counting both the regular season and postseason.

NWC 3, CUNE 1 (25-9, 16-25, 25-14, 25-21)

How It Happened
Northwestern opened the first set with a commanding performance, establishing an early 4-0 lead with contributions from Stella Winterfeld and an ace by Maggie Bloom. The Bulldogs struggled with errors, including several service errors that widened the Red Raiders' lead. Despite a timeout called at 8-2, the Bulldogs could not halt the Raiders' momentum as Nyah Potthoff facilitated multiple kills, including one by Maddy Sampson. Northwestern continued to dominate, with Liv Reitsma assisting on multiple kills, extending the lead to 17-4. The Raiders closed the set decisively at 25-9, with Stella Winterfeld securing the final point on a kill from Potthoff's assist.

Concordia capitalized on a strong start and a series of Northwestern errors to establish an early 6-1 lead in the second set. Ava Greene contributed two pivotal blocks during this run. The Raiders responded with a series of kills, including three from Winterfeld, narrowing the deficit to 14-13 following a service ace by Potthoff. Despite Northwestern's efforts, the Bulldogs retained momentum through consistent play from Savannah Shelburne, who assisted on multiple attacks. Concordia closed the set on a 6-0 run, highlighted by two kills from Kya Scott, securing a 25-16 victory.

Northwestern seized momentum in the third set with a decisive 25-14 win, propelled by a series of strong offensive plays. After trailing 3-0 due to early errors, the Raiders turned things around with a 4-0 run, highlighted by kills from Winterfeld and Zavyr Metzger, both assisted by Reitsma. Concordia's efforts to regain control were thwarted by consistent Northwestern attacks, including a service ace by Bloom that extended the lead to 16-10. Despite a brief Bulldogs rally, Northwestern maintained dominance, closing out the set with a kill by Emma Westphal and a Bulldog attacking error.

The Raiders took an early lead in the fourth set with Sidney Oostra's service ace and two consecutive kills by Aubrey De Groot, bringing the score to 3-0. Concordia fought back with kills from Ella Waters and Ashley Keck, but Northwestern maintained momentum, extending their lead to 9-4, forcing a Bulldog timeout. Despite a short rally from the home side, the Raiders continued to control the set with contributions from Winterfeld and Sampson, pushing the score to 18-13. Following another timeout by Concordia, Northwestern closed out the set decisively with Westphal's final kill, giving Northwestern it's second top-25 win of the year.
