Softball Showcases Offense on Opening Day

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – Northwestern outscored its opponents 18-2 on the first day of the season, going 2-0 at the ASB Dome Classic, hosted by Dordt University.

GAME 1: NWC 7, USF 1
Pitching Decisions
Win: Ellie Jacobson (1-0)
Loss: M. Duncan (0-1)
Save: None

How It Happened
Gwen Mikkelsen broke the game open in the fourth with a 3-RBI double, helping the Raiders to their first win of the new year.

In a pitching duel through the first three innings, it was the Raiders who struck first when Charli Bomgaars brought home the game's first run on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded. Then, with two outs, Northwestern added four runs, first on a bases-loaded walk from Sydney Jacobs. After a USF pitching change, Gwen Mikkelsen drove the ball to the gap, hustling to second and clearing the bases.

Northwestern added to the lead in the next frame as Cassidy Gors singled to opposite field sending home Chloe Gallegos, who led the inning off with a base hit.

USF put a run on the board with a towering blast to right to open the sixth, but that was all the Raiders would allow in a 7-1 win.

How It Happened
Gwen Mikkelsen got the scoring started, hitting an RBI single with a runner on third to put Northwestern on the board.

After Culver-Stockton tied the game on a base hit in the bottom of the first, the Red Raiders responded with a two-run inning in the second. In her second plate appearance of the day, Sydney Jacobs hit a two-out triple with runners on first and second, clearing the bases and making the score 3-1.

The score held until the top of the fifth when the middle of the Raider order struck again, with Jacobs and Mikkelsen advancing into scoring position, setting the table for a Chloe Gallegos two-RBI double. In the next at-bat, Tatum Schmalbeck brought Reese Marek home with a double of her own, making it 6-1.

Northwestern exploded for five more runs in the sixth, starting with a base hit from Jori Hajek that brought two runners home. Later, Gallegos produced again with an RBI single before the Raiders forced an early ending with Berkley Johannsen's single that scored two.

GAME NOTES:
  • Sydney Jacobs was efficient at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a triple.
  • She also walked once, drove in two runs, scored twice, and had a stolen base.
  • Chloe Gallegos went 2-for-3 with a double and drove in three runs.
  • Gwen Mikkelsen was a perfect 4-for-4 with a double.
