Raiders Pick Up Two Wins on Saturday

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – Northwestern ended its opening weekend 4-0 after two wins over York (Neb.) and Dakota State (S.D.) on Saturday.

GAME 1: NWC 12, YORK 1

How It Happened
The Raiders struck in the first inning, putting up one run on an RBI by Chloe Gallegos with two runners in scoring position. They added one more in the second, as Aly Vortherms recorded a steal and came around to score on a base hit from Sydney Jacobs.

After York cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the inning, Tatum Schmalbeck brought the lead back to two on an RBI base hit that scored Jori Hajek.

In the sixth, Jacobs tripled with two runners in scoring position to add a pair of insurance runs before coming around to score herself in the next at-bat.

Leading 6-1 heading into the final frame, Northwestern put up six more runs with Jacobs, Cassidy Gors, Berkley Johannsen, Gwen Mikkelsen, and Maddie Kvatek all driving in runs.

GAME NOTES:
  • Sydney Jacobs drove in four runs and was a home run shy of the cycle.
  • She reached base in four of her five plate appearances.
  • Jori Hajek and Ashtyn Billings each had two steals.
  • In her first start of the year, Abby Flanagan allowed just two hits in 5.0 innings.

How It Happened
Northwestern took the lead early and used a 10-strikeout performance from three pitchers to record a 3-0 win.

Chloe Gallegos hit Northwestern's first home run of the year and her sixth of her career, putting the Raiders up 2-0 in the second.

In the fifth, Ashtyn Billings stole second and then came around to score on Berkley Johannsen's base hit to make the score 3-0.

The Trojans left the bases loaded in bottom of the sixth, setting up Kate Kralik for the save in the final inning.

Up Next: Northwestern heads back to the ASB Dome for another weekend of softball next week, first playing Mount Mercy at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 7.
