Three Point Storm Leads to Large Victory

Orange City, Iowa. – Northwestern defeated Morningside 90-64 on Wednesday at the Bultman Center. 

In the first quarter, Northwestern took an early lead with Molly Schany's layup at 9:43, and the team maintained momentum with Allison Piercy's consecutive 3-pointers, extending their lead to 13-6 by 5:12. Lexie Van Kekerix contributed significantly with multiple layups, including at 1:42, helping the Red Raiders achieve their largest lead of 12 points. The team finished the quarter strong with contributions from Akaysa Duitscher and Ashtyn Wobig, ending the quarter at 29-19. 

In the second quarter, the Raiders extended their lead with efficient scoring and strong defense. Schany contributed significantly with two layups and a 3-pointer early in the quarter, leading to a 15-point lead. Hali Anderson excelled with a steal and back-to-back layups at the 06:12 mark, further solidifying the Red Raiders' control. The team maintained a strong defensive presence, limiting the Mustangs' opportunities and closing the quarter with a 26-13 advantage. 

In the third quarter, the Raiders maintained a strong lead, highlighted by Wobig's two consecutive 3-pointers, increasing their score to 61-36. Piercy contributed with a layup at the 5:53 mark, assisted by Anderson, who also added a 3-pointer later in the quarter. Schany and Duitscher were consistent at the free-throw line, helping extend the Raiders' lead to 69-45 by converting multiple free throws. 

In the fourth quarter, Northwestern maintained a steady lead over the Mustangs, ending with a 90-64 victory. Maren Nerem scored two key layups early in the quarter, and Duitscher contributed significantly with a 3-pointer and a layup, pushing the home team's score to 88. Emily TerWee sealed the performance with a layup, assisted by Savannah Schlueter, as the Raiders' defense, highlighted by Duitscher's block and defensive rebound, kept the Mustangs at bay.

  • Molly Schany led the team in points and rebounds with 17 and 9 

  • Wobig's three-point shooting boosts her to 50% from beyond the arc 

  • Lexie Van Kekerix stuffed the stat sheet with 10 points, 6 Rebounds, and 6 Assists 

  • The Raiders had 6 players score in double figures 

  • Northwestern outrebounded the Mustangs 48-18.
