Volleyball Starts Season 10-0 Ahead of GPAC Play

OMAHA, Neb. – Northwestern won its third top-25 matchup of the season on Saturday morning, coming down to the wire against No. 16 Indiana University Kokomo.

NWC 3, IUK 2 (25-23, 29-27, 17-25, 23-25, 15-10)
How It Happened
A five-set thriller saw the No. 2 Raiders hold off the reverse sweep after taking the opening two frames and using a 15-10 win in the fifth to close out the main non-conference schedule.

Kokomo started on top, scoring the first four points to take an early lead. The Raiders bounced back to tie it at 8-8 on a Jori Hajek service ace before the Cougars regained a 16-13 lead at the midway point. Trailing 23-21 late, Northwestern scored four in a row to close the set and take a 1-0 lead.

Northwestern needed to battle from behind again in the second set, getting pushed to set point on multiple occasions. With the Raiders up 22-20, Kokomo scored three consecutive to grab momentum and the lead. Back-to-back kills from Alysen Dexter and Jazlin Douma put the Raiders nearest to 25, but the Cougars then took a 25-24 lead to put Northwestern on edge. Trailing 27-26 in the marathon set, Dexter tied it with a kill before an attack error and a Dexter/Metzger block put Northwestern ahead 2-0.

The Cougars used a 9-0 run to storm ahead in the third and stay alive, leading 18-8 at one point en route to a 25-17 set win.

With the Raiders hoping to close it out in the fourth, Kokomo jumped out to a 11-6 lead and seemed to be on its way to a win. Northwestern battled back to knot it up at 17-17 on a Douma kill and even took a 23-22 lead off the arm of Emma Westphal. The Cougars kept the match going, however, scoring the next three points to force a fifth set.

Northwestern never trailed in the decisive set, obtaining its largest lead of the match and closing the deal with a Douma kill.
