Raiders Collect Two Wins on Friday

OMAHA, Neb. – It was another 2-0 day for the second-ranked Red Raiders on Friday, opening up the CSM Labor Day Classic with victories over No. 23 Providence (Mont.) and The Master's (Calif.).

"These were two good wins today," head coach Kyle Van Den Bosch commented. "I thought we played clean all day, hitting over .240 in both matches against quality opponents. I thought our defense from our blocking to our backcourt had aa really good day, especially from 20-25 in the sets today."

MATCH 1: NWC 3, UP 0 (27-25, 25-20, 25-17)
How It Happened
After a thrilling first set went to extra points, the No. 2-ranked Northwestern Red Raiders handled business against No. 23 Providence (Mont.) to start play at the CSM Labor Day Classic.

Service flipped early and often in set one, with both teams putting together runs of 3-0 or more on the way to an early 10-8 Northwestern lead. The Argos continued to battle, but Northwestern never let the deficit grow to more than one point. Late in the set, Providence grabbed a 22-21 advantage, but Maddy Sampson and Jazlin Douma connected on back-to-back kills to put the Raiders back in front. Coming to set point, the Argos stayed alive to make it 24-24 before Northwestern took the final two points on a UP service error and a block from Zavyr Metzger and Emma Westphal to move up 1-0.

Northwestern came out strong from the gate in the next set, with Alysen Dexter controlling the serve to take a 7-1 lead. In the run, Metzger collected four blocks in seven volleys. The Raiders all but closed things out with another 6-1 run later on, holding a 22-14 advantage. The Argos battled back to a four-point deficit, with the Raiders responding to close the set with a Douma kill.

Searching for their fifth-straight sweep, Northwestern again started on the attack, using a 5-0 run to grab a 9-3 hold. The Raiders found offense from a variety of arms through the midway point of the third before finishing the match with their largest lead of the set and winning 25-17.

Game Notes:
  • Alysen Dexter tallied 16 kills and five service aces, also hitting .353.
  • Maddy Sampson led the way from the middle, notching seven kills on a scorching .636 mark.
  • Jazlin Douma recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs.
  • Logan Miller and Liv Reitsma split setting duties, totaling 20 and 19 assists, respectively.
  • Zavyr Metzger had seven blocks and three kills.
  • Northwestern hit .273 to Providence's .174.
MATCH 2: NWC 3, MU 1 (22-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-22)
How It Happened
In a competitive four sets where neither team one by more than four, Northwestern earned its second win of the day with a 3-1 victory over The Master's (Calif.).

The Mustangs got out to a quick start, moving ahead 9-3 early to force a Red Raider timeout. Later, trailing 15-9, Northwestern rallied back with a 7-0 run to take a 16-15 lead. It was then a back-and-forth contest before The Master's took five of the final seven points to take down the Raiders in set one.

Northwestern needed a comeback effort in the second frame, as the Mustangs opened up a 12-6 lead to put the No. 2 Raiders on the ropes. On Jori Hajek's service, the Raiders rattled off six consecutive to knot it at 12-12. Zavyr Metzger was the catalyst at the midway point, helping Northwestern to another 5-0 run with two blocks and a kill to take a three-point lead. Following a late Northwestern timeout, the Raiders scored the final two with a service error and a Metzger kill.

The third set saw both teams trade points all the way to an 18-18 tie until The Master's took a 22-21 lead. Northwestern responded with a 4-1 rally to end the set, led by Alysen Dexter's three kills.

The final set was another competitive battle that saw the Mustangs take a 5-2 lead to open things up. Three straight points tied it back up 6-6 with Sidney Oostra on the service. Dexter helped her team finish strong, first getting a kill to put the Raiders ahead 20-19, then getting three of the next five Northwestern points to end the set 25-22.

Game Notes:
  • Emma Westphal totaled a career-high nine blocks and sent down five kills.
  • Jori Hajek had a career-high 23 digs.
  • Alysen Dexter led the way with 21 kills on a .340 attacking percentage.
  • Jazlin Douma collected a season-high 19 kills and had two blocks.
  • Liv Reitsma dished out a season-high 29 assists.
  • Zavyr Metzger contributed on both sides of the net with eight blocks and six kills.
  • Northwestern hit .257 on the night, including a .410 clip in the fourth set.
