Volleyball Displays Balanced Effort in Bellevue Classic

BELLEVUE, Neb. – The No. 2-ranked Northwestern volleyball team swept its way to a 7-0 record on Saturday, winning every set in its weekend at the GoSarpy.com Tournament, hosted by Bellevue University.

MATCH 1: NWC 3, OKWU 0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-22)
How It Happened
In its first top-15 matchup of the year, Northwestern faced No. 13 Oklahoma Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.

The Raiders got out to a good start, moving ahead 5-1 to begin the first set. Later on, Zavyr Metzger and Savonne Sterk combined for back-to-back blocks, forcing an Oklahoma Wesleyan timeout at 14-7. After holding the lead for the majority of the set, Northwestern closed it out at 25-20 with a kill from Emma Westphal.

Despite the final numbers, it was a very competitive contest, showcased in the second set. Northwestern got out to a torrid start, taking a 10-2 lead on a 5-0 service run by Logan Miller. Through the midway point, the Eagles scorched back, coming within a point on multiple occasions. With the score at 23-22 late in the set, Northwestern capitalized on two Jazlin Douma kills for the 25-23 win.

The third and final set saw the Eagles take an early lead, but the Raiders regained a 9-6 advantage on Jazlin Douma's service, along with two kills from Maddy Sampson. Oklahoma Wesleyan led once more, taking an 18-17 lead before Northwestern rattled off four consecutive points to move ahead 21-18. Metzger helped the Raiders close out the match, getting a kill and a block in the final four Red Raider points.

How It Happened
Aces were the catalyst in Northwestern's straight-set win over Goshen (Ind.) in the Lied Activity Center.

The Maple Leafs came to compete early, starting ahead 10-9, but the Raiders went on a 12-0 run on Liv Reitsma's service to take a commanding 21-10 lead. Following the run, Northwestern grabbed four of the next five points to close the opening frame.

Northwestern carried the momentum into the next set, taking a 16-3 lead, highlighted by three service aces from Logan Miller. Stella Winterfeld and Katie Hopkins helped the Raiders get the final two points en route to a 25-11 win.

Searching for the sweep, Northwestern found more success off the serve of Logan Miller. During her service run, Miller recorded four aces as part of her eight total on the day to take a 9-3 lead. Maggie Bloom also came in to contribute, helping the Raiders earn four points as Northwestern finished the weekend with a 25-12 set three victory.
