Northwestern Wins 50th Game, Advances to Opening Round Championship

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – A pinch-hit RBI double to the opposite field by Ravyn Krachey scored the game-winning run, as Northwestern took down No. 11 Madonna (Mich.), 3-2 in the winner's bracket.

"It's a good time to be a Red Raider," commented head coach Shane Bouman. "Our team is around powerful men and women throughout our athletic department, and watching our other athletic teams helps model how to perform in big games. Madonna's a great team, and our Raiders aren't too bad either."

How It Happened
A top-15 matchup saw No. 9 Northwestern take on No. 11 Madonna for a spot in the NAIA Opening Round championship, where the Raiders came through late to earn a 3-2 win.

After Madonna threatened to score in the top of the second, Northwestern used a Chloe Gallegos leadoff triple in the bottom half to be the first team to break onto the scoreboard. The courtesy runner, Alyssa Vortherms, sped home on a squeeze bunt by Ashtyn Billings, scoring the game's first run.

The Crusaders broke through in the top of the third, using back-to-back hits, including a double to the fence, to tie the game on a sacrifice fly.

Northwestern answered in the bottom of the third, with Charli Bomgaars reaching on a leadoff bunt single and coming around to score on Kameryn Etherington's RBI base hit.

Once again, Madonna tied it back up, using a leadoff home run deep to right field to even the score.

In the fifth, Northwestern called upon Ravyn Krachey to pinch hit with one away and a runner on second, and Krachey answered the call. She drove an opposite field double over the outfielder's head, bringing in Maddie Kvatek to score the game-winning run.

Two groundouts and a strikeout ended the game in the seventh, and Northwestern advanced to its first NAIA Opening Round championship for the first time.
