Raiders’ Historic Season Comes to a Close

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – In a rematch of yesterday's winner's bracket contest, No. 9 Northwestern took on No. 11 Madonna (Mich.) for a trip to the NAIA Softball World Series. After Madonna won convincingly in game one, a competitive game two saw Northwestern's season end on a 1-0 loss.

Loss: Ellie Jacobson (8-1)

How It Happened
The Raiders put one across in the bottom of the first, as game one was shaping up to be a close matchup. Jori Hajek led off the inning with a base hit, while Kameryn Etherington put two on with a base on balls. In the next at-bat, Chloe Gallegos hit the ball into right, allowing Hajek to score from second and tie the game.

Madonna created distance in the second and third innings, scoring four runs on six hits to stretch the lead to 5-1.

The Crusaders plated one more in the fifth, as it was time for Northwestern to start its comeback bid. Hajek once again led off the inning with a hit, doubling to center and later coming in to score on an RBI groundout by Gallegos. In the sixth, the Raiders loaded the bases with one away, but the Crusaders set down the top of the Red Raider order to force the if-necessary rematch.

How It Happened
With Northwestern and Madonna meeting for the third time in two days, the stakes were high with a trip to the NAIA World Series on the line.

Offense was difficult for both teams to come by as Kameryn Etherington and Maeson Schlaud battled in the circle, and one run was all it took for Madonna to get by the Raiders. The Crusaders scored in the fourth, as the runner moving to third on a fielder's choice scored on an error.

Northwestern left four runners at second base, as the defense held firm to keep an opportunistic Raider offense off the board.

Game Notes:
  • Northwestern ended a historic season, hitting its highest single-season wins total (50).
  • Jori Hajek and Abby Pate had two hits each.
  • Kameryn Etherington struck out two batters in six innings pitched, not allowing a walk or an earned run.
