Two Home Runs on the Day Not Enough as Jamestown Defeats Northwestern

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – Mason Porepp and Sam Stanford both hit solo home runs in Saturday's doubleheader, but Jamestown took both contests to pick up the sweep.

GAME 1: UJ 2, NWC 1
Pitching Decisions
Win: A. Liestman (5-0)
Loss: Drew Dykstra (3-3)
Save: None

How It Happened
With all three runs in the game coming in the final two innings, it was the battle on the mound that set up a walk-off home run for Jamestown in game one.

Drew Dykstra threw five no-hit innings before Northwestern took a 1-0 lead on a two-out slam in the bottom of the sixth. It was Mason Porepp's fourth home run in five games as the Raiders jumped ahead.

Skipping ahead to the bottom of the seventh, the Jimmies put a runner aboard on an error to start the inning. In the next at-bat, Jamestown ended the game with a walk-off home run, winning the GPAC battle 2-1.

Game Notes:
  • Mason Porepp hit his team-leading fourth home run of the season.
  • Drew Dykstra took a no-hitter into the fifth, striking out nine and giving up just two hits.
  • Dykstra has thrown 66 strikeouts this season, one away from moving into a tie for fifth in the single-season strikeouts record book.
  • Sam Stanford went 2-for-3 at the plate.
GAME 2: UJ 20, NWC 2 (7 inn.)
Pitching Decisions
Win: R. Radkey (3-1)
Loss: Aidan Sieperda (2-5)
Save: None

How It Happened
Northwestern had the lead early, but Jamestown hit seven home runs on the way to a 20-2 win over the Raiders.

The ball left the park often to start the game, with Sam Stanford crushing his third home run of the season with two outs in the first, followed by a Jamestown solo homer in their half of the inning.

With the score knotted at 1-1, the Raiders put runners on first and second before scoring on an error to send Ranier Castillo across as the second run.

From that point on, it was all Jamestown, as the Jimmies hit two home runs in the bottom of the second to grab a 4-2 lead. The advantage was extended in each inning from that point on, highlighted by a five-run inning in the third to break the game open.

Game Notes:
  • Sam Stanford hit his third home run of the year.
  • Stanford went 2-for-4 at the plate.
  • Devin Dirkx had two hits and a walk.
Up Next: Northwestern will take on NCAA Division I South Dakota State on Tuesday in Brookings, S.D. at 3:00 p.m.
