Northwestern Sweeps Midland to Win GPAC Regular Season Title

Raiders will host tournament pod as No. 1 seed

FREMONT, Neb. – Late-game heroics helped No. 9 Northwestern to two wins at No. 12 Midland on Saturday, overtaking the Warriors for the GPAC regular season crown. The Raiders have won the GPAC regular season title in back-to-back seasons.

GAME 1: NWC 4, MID 2
Pitching Decisions
Win: Kate Kralik (16-1)
Loss: Aliyah Rincon (23-5)
Save: None

How It Happened
A late error kept Northwestern's hopes alive in the seventh inning as the Raiders took down Midland 4-2.

The Warriors grabbed the early lead, scoring in the second and third on RBI singles to hold a 2-0 advantage.

Northwestern got on the board in the fourth, with Gwen Mikkelsen hitting a leadoff home run to center, her third of the season.

After the Raiders got out of a jam in the fourth and fifth to keep it a one-run game, Northwestern put runners at first and second on an error and a walk. Ravyn Krachey entered as a pinch hitter, hitting the ball hard to short, and a Midland error allowed Alyssa Vortherms to score and extended the game. Jori Hajek then made the Warriors pay for their mistake, singling up the middle to drive in the game-winning runs, giving the Raiders a 4-2 lead.

Despite giving up a leadoff single, Kate Kralik shut Midland down in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win.

Game Notes:
GAME 2: NWC 1, MID 0 (6 inn. – lightning)
Pitching Decisions
Win: Kameryn Etherington (18-4)
Loss: Paeton Coler (13-3)
Save: Kate Kralik (3)

How It Happened
A weather-shortened contest secured the GPAC regular season title, with the Raiders winning in a pitcher's duel.

Midland threatened in the bottom of the second, loading the bases when Ellie Jacobson kept the Warriors off the board with a strikeout.

The Raiders searched for their first hit of the game until a leadoff bunt single by Jori Hajek put them in the hit column, leaving a runner on base to end the inning.

The game's first run was scored in the sixth, as Ravyn Krachey drew a leadoff walk, and her pinch runner Maddie Kvatek was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, moved to third on a base hit, and brought home on an RBI groundout by Gwen Mikkelsen.

Lightning cleared the diamond in the top of the seventh, and with storms continuing to roll through eastern Nebraska, the game was suspended.

Game Notes:
Up Next: Northwestern will host a GPAC tournament four-team pod, opening with 8-seeded Mount Marty at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday. With a win, Northwestern will play again at 4:00 p.m., and with a loss at 6:00 p.m.
