Raiders Carry Momentum Into Game Two Win

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Northwestern baseball team rallied late to a close loss in game one and had a dominant game two performance to take a split in today's doubleheader at Briar Cliff.

How It Happened
A valiant seventh-inning rally left the Raiders one run short, falling 8-7 in the first game of the four-game weekend series.

The Raiders went ahead 2-0 in the second, with Ranier Castillo driving in a run with runners on first and second and Ethan Buckner launching a sacrifice fly to right.

Briar Cliff broke onto the scoreboard in the third, putting up six runs with a double and a home run to go up 6-2.

In the fourth, Northwestern inched back, with Drew Dykstra bringing a run in on a hit-by-pitch and Luke Wroblewski reaching on a fielder's choice to bring home a run.

A two-run inning from Briar Cliff pushed the Raiders to the seventh trailing by four, but Northwestern was not done yet. Dykstra led off the inning with a single, followed by a Wroblewski base hit and a defensive error to load the bases. The Raiders added their first run of the frame with an RBI groundout for Devin Dirkx, and in the next at-bat, Mason Porepp pulled a double to left field to score two and make it 8-7. With one out, and runners at the corners, Briar Cliff stopped Northwestern and ended the game on a double play.

How It Happened
A seven-run fourth inning pushed Northwestern ahead for good, highlighted by a three-run home run from Luke Wroblewski.

After Briar Cliff grabbed the lead in the third, moving ahead 1-0 on an RBI single.

Northwestern responded in the fourth, with Ranier Castillo giving the Raiders the lead with a bases-loaded 2-RBI single into right. Northwestern continued its productive at-bats, with an RBI groundout by Mo Watson and an RBI single from Ethan Buckner to go ahead 4-1. Then, Drew Dykstra doubled to put two in scoring position, and Wroblewski brought them home on a three-run blast.

Briar Cliff threatened in the sixth, putting three on the board, but Jakeb Swallow entered the game with two outs to slam the door.

Game Notes:
  • Northwestern's pitching staff now sits at 389 strikeouts on the year, breaking the previous record of 384, set last season.
  • Drew Dykstra struck out six in the start.
