Raiders Split in Weather-Affected Doubleheader

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – After Tuesday's games were moved indoors due to inclement weather, a tornado warning forced a short delay as Northwestern split an afternoon meeting with Dordt.

GAME 1: NWC 6, DORDT 1
Pitching Decisions
Win: Kate Kralik (14-1)
Loss: C. Kreuz (11-7)
Save: None

How It Happened
In the first of two games in the American State Bank Sports Complex, Northwestern used a four-run third inning to pick up a 6-1 win over Dordt.

The Raiders were held hitless in the first two frames before using a two-out rally to take the lead in the third inning. Charli Bomgaars and Kameryn Etherington both reached on a walk, while Bomgaars later advanced home on a steal-and-advance for the game's first run. In the next at-bat, Tatum Schmalbeck hit an RBI single to make the score 2-0. Northwestern continued to expand the lead as Chloe Gallegos doubled home a run before finishing off their four-run inning on a Jori Hajek RBI single.

Northwestern added on to its lead in the fourth, with Ashtyn Billings hitting an RBI single to score Randi Childress and make the score 5-0.

After Dordt added a run in the sixth, Gallegos drove in her second run of the game in the seventh, adding insurance to the Raider lead. Dordt put two on in the final half-inning, but left runners at the corners.

How It Happened
Northwestern scored the first two runs, but a big fifth inning from Dordt put an end to the Raiders' 20-game winning streak.

After the Raiders went down in order in the top of the first, a tornado warning induced a weather delay, setting the game back up 30 minutes later in the bottom of the first. Northwestern struck first, putting a run up on a squeeze bunt by Kameryn Etherington to send Ashtyn Billings home after her leadoff double. Northwestern took a 2-0 lead in the fourth when Randi Childress doubled to leadoff the inning, coming around to score on the sacrifice fly from Abby Pate.

Down but not out, the Defenders tied the game on a two-out double to the fence in the bottom of the fourth, setting up an exciting finish. The fifth inning saw Dordt add two more, taking advantage of a leadoff triple and an error to grab a 4-2 lead.

Northwestern left the bases loaded in the top of the sixth as Dordt got the force out at home to end the inning in what would be the Raiders' final scoring opportunity.

Game Notes:
Up Next: Northwestern will host two doubleheaders this weekend, facing College of Saint Mary on Friday and Morningside on Saturday.
